Seattle, in the county of King and State of ldlashington,have invented a certain new `V and usetul Improvement. 1n Clanlining-Bolts,`
of which the following is a specification. i
My inwntion relates to improvements in y clamping bolts, yand the object of my invention, is to provide a claniphigbolt which shall be adapted to clamp an "object'toniporarity against one side` ot' a. plate of metal, as,.t`or instance, to one side of a metalplate comprising a part ot' the -wall ot' the hull ol an iron ship in the process ofbuilding such ship, and which bolt shall embody such features as will adapt it to be disposed in itsoperative position to extend through said plate and through the object to be clamped thereto, by one werkuren' located on one side of said plate, without the aid of any other f workman located on the other side et' said plaw. i l
I accomplish this object by devices illustrated in the Aaccompan ying drawings, Whereini Figure 1 is a View in elevation ot' one side of a clampin bolt embodying my invention which view s ows anA operative part in ele- Vation ot one of its broader sides;

The clamping bar 7 has one ot' its end portions bifurcated by a narrow slot J that extends to a point near the pivot 8 as shown by full lines in Fig. 2, and as indicated by the line 10.v formed by dots and by'another line 1l formed by dots und dashes `in Fig. l.
Extending through the members oit the bifurcatedportion of the clainping'bar 7, at a point near the inner end ot the slot 9 and near one of its edges, a pin l2 indicated by parallel dotted lines in Fig. il, the same pin 12 being indicated at each of two different operative positions by a circular dotted line in Fig. 1.

To utilize a clamping bolt embodyinginy invention in -the manner hereinoefore de scribed, the clamping bar 7 is disposed par allel with the axis of the holt 4: in the pd' sition indicatedby` Fig. 2, and the workman, being located on that side ot' plate to which an object 1s to be clamped, inserts the clamping member 7 and the adjacent end portion of thel bolt t throu h a hole in said object and through a ho e that extends through the plate, to which the object is to be clamped, for such' distancethat the inner end of the clamping bar Z will pass be yond the other side of said-plate and. there upon the Wire 13 is pushed inwardlyl to swing the clamping barlY into a position that is at right angles to the bolt Il whereupon the bolt 4. is pulled back until the adjacent edge portion of the clamping bar 7 vrests againstiet against the out/er suraceof the object to be clamped securely to holdersaid object in its required position. During the operation of screwing the nut on the screw-threads the bolt may be pre- 5 Vented from turning by applying a suitable tool, as another wrench, to the squared end portion 5, which will project outwardly from the nut.
When it is desired to remove the object from the side of a plate the nut is removed m the screw-threaded portion of the bolt v and thereupon the bolt-'is pushed inwardly yfor afdistance to permit theclarnping bar 7 to be swung into its position parallel with the axis of the bolt inrespons'e to pulling l the Wire rod 13 outwardly and with the clampin bar 7 in such position the bolt may be who] y withdrawn to release the object clam ed.
` at'I claim is: A elampin bolt of the class described one portion of W ich is provided with a screwthread and another portion of which is bifurcated by a slot that extends from one vtends ma p :heladera of its ends to a point near thev inner end of said screw-threadLsaid bolt being provided with a hole that extends longitudinally from the inner end of said slot throughout the remainder of its length; a clamping bar pivotally mounted in the slot between the members of the bifurcated portion of said cylindrical portion, said clamping bar bein provided with a slot that exane parallel with its broader sides from one of its ends to a point near its pivot; and a wire rod having one of its ends articulated with said clamping bar atI u point within thel slot thereof .and disposed to extend from said point through said longitudinal disposed hole for a distance beyond the outer end thereof to'adapt it to be munipulated to move in endwise directions to cause said clamping bar to swing on its pivot to dierent an lar positions.
