A TTORNEYS Patented Sept. 15, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT erica EMIL A. WINNEWISSER, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR 'IO T'I-IE IPROSPERITY COMPANY INC., OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK Y Y ao ACTUATING MECHANISM FOR PRESSING MACHINES Application filed August 9, 1929. Serial No. 384,694.
This invention relates to pressing machines such as garment and laundry Vpresses and has for its object a particularly simple and efficient meansfor boosting the pressure applied to the movable pressing element, in addition to the pressure applied directly thereto by a prime mover.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of a pressing machine embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken approximately on the plane of line 2 2, Figure l.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the parts seen in Figure 2.
This invention comprises, generally, a stationary part arranged in the path of a part of the motion transmitting mechanismy ofthe machine to actuate said part in. addition to the motion imparted thereto by a prime mover in order to boost the pressure applied to the movable pressing element, one of said parts having a cam which effects the boosting operation when the parts engage and the motion transmitting part is being actuated by the prime mover.
I hc ve here shown my invention as embodied in a conventional type f laundry press in which the cooperating pressing elements are a buck 1 and a head 2 movabtle toward and from the buck.
The buck 1 is mounted on a suitable bracket 3 which in turn'is mounted upon a suitable frame 4. The head 2 is carried by a lever 5 pivoted at 6 between its ends to a standard 7 rising from the frame.
The buck is overlaid with a compressible padding 8, and the subject matter of this invention acts not only to boost the pressure Vto apply the heavy pressure but also it applies uniform heavy pressure regardless of the thickness of the work and the padding and the amount of compression of the padding.
The press is here shown as actuated by .Y
power, that is, the prime mover is a motor and the motion transmitting means between the motor and the movable pressing element or head 2, in addition to the lever comprises toggle links 9, 10, the link 9 being connected by a pivot at its upper end at 11 to the rear arm of the lever 5 and the link 10, bya pivot at 12 at its lower end to the base ofthe frame. The links 9, are pivoted together by a. joint permitting relatively endwise movement of the link 9 to give a boostin action to the straightened toggle.
The links are here shown as connectedtogether by a pin-and-slot connection, the link 9 being provided with the pin 13 at its lower end which works in lengthwise slotsla provided in the upper bifurcated end of the link 10. The lower end of the link is also formed bifurcated and a roller 15 is mounted on the pin 13 between the bifurcations thereof, the
roller being mounted eccentrically on the pin 16 is a. stationary track mounted on a bracket 17, the track being curved about a center substantially on the aXis'12 but preferably formed to give a slight cam action as will be later described. This track is Yar.- ranged in the path of the roller 15, the bracket 17 extending betweenthe bifurcations of the lever 10 and being provided'with a suitable friction face 18.
After thertoggle straightens the roller 15 coacts with the track and then during further straightening of the toggle, the roller rolls up the track, and being eccentrically mounted, moves the link 9 endwise relatively to the link 10 and thus boosts the pressure applied to the head carrying lever. 5. The track 16 is also a cam and acts to boost the Ylink 9 after the toggle has passed its dead center line.
The prime mover may be of any suitable form, size or construction. It is here shown as the rod 19 of a piston movable in an oscillating cylinder 20 pivoted at 21 to the frame. The piston rod 19 is pivoted at 22 to a forwardly extending arm 23 forming an angle lever with the toggle link 10.V The flow of motive fluid, `as compressed air, to and from the cylinder is controlled in any suitable manner or by any suitable valve mechanism located in a casing 24.
25 is a push button for operating the valves to permit the flow of air to the cylinders and 26- is a tri lever for exhausting the air from the cylinc er. The piston inthe cylinder is single acting and the press is opened When the pressure in the cylinder is released by countersprings 27.
In operation, assuming that the press is open, the operator depresses the button 25,. permitting air to enter into the cylinder 2O and through the piston and piston rod-19 and arm 23 moving the toggle from folded position toward straightened position Where the roller 15 engages the track 16 or the friction plate 18 thereon.
During further straightening of the toggle, the roller 15 moves about its eccentric axis and thus boosts the link 9*. The roller 15 rides. along the track until full pressure is delivered or until the resistance of the Work to the closing of the head 2 overcomes the pressure in the cylinder 20.
