This invention relates to toggle-mechanisms and more particularly to toggle mechanisms suchas are used in garment and laundry pressing machines, and has for Its oh- 6 ject a'pa'rticularly simple and eflicient means forming part of-the tog leitself and automatically operable to increase the len h of the toggle in addition to the normal ength of the toggle or the increase due to'the normal straightening of the toggle as the toggle moves into its dead center line.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.

Figure 3 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the normal action of a toggle used 1n pressing machines.
This toggle mechanism com rises means for extending the eifective lengt of the toggle as the toggle mechanism straightens in addition to its normal maximum length, such means being self-contained or being built into the toggle or forming part of the tog le itself so that it is carried by and move le with the toggle.
In the normal toggle mechanism, the toggle when in straightened position is at its maximum length and this invention includes means for increasing the length of a toggle in addition to the increase due to the normal straightening of the toggle, such means being a partof the toggle as boosting mechanism which lifts the entire toggle endwise after it has been straightened.
By my invention, the length of the tog le is increased as the toggle is moving in .t e neiglliborhood of the dead center line of the to' g e.

1 and 2 designate generally the links of the toggle, oneof these links as the lower link 1 being pivoted on a pivotS and the other on an eccentric mounted. on the pivot 8 to turn therewith, the link 1 being pivoted at its lower end at 4 to a fixed point on the frame-5 of the machine provided with the toggle and the link 2 being pivoted at 6 to a movable part as the yoke lever 7 of the pressing machine. 7
The link 2 is mounted on an eccentric 3, which is mounted upon the shaft pivot or spindle 8, that is this pivot or shaft 8 is eccentrically mounted in the part 3. The link 1 is mounted on the pivot or shaft 8 and the link 2 on theeccentric or hearingpart 3. Means is provided for automatically rotating the. shaft or pivot 8 and hence the eccentric as the toggle links move into or through the dead center line of the toggle.
' As here illustrated, theshaft 8 is provided with an outwardly or radially extending arm 9 normally engaged with a stop 10 on one of the links as the link 1 to hold the cam from rotation in one direction during the closing of the toggle, and a shoulder 11 is arranged in thepath of this arm 9 to engage the same and move the shaft and cam about its axis relatively to the toggle links as the toggle straightens. Such rotation of the cam' brings the major diameter of the cam nearly but notquite into line with the toggle links and hence increases the effective length of the toggle. The shoulder 11 is adjustablycarried by a bracket ll 'carried by the frame 5 of the machine provided with'the toggle.
The pressing machine in addition to its frame includes co-operating pressing eleframe and a press head 13 movable toward and from the buck 12 and carried by the yoke lever 7 The toggle link 1 is provided with a forwardly extending arm 14 rigid therewithwhich may serve as a treadle or may be connected to a suitable power means here shown as a cylinder 15 in which moves a piston having a rod 16 connected to the usual trip lever,

In pressing machines of this t pe greatest pressure is required at the end 0 the closing movement ofthe toggle but at the end the closing movement ofthe toggle, the thrust of the toggle is least or ractically nil for the reason that as seen in igure 3, the joint of the toggle is passing in practically a straight line or a line at a right angle to the dead center line.
During the first part of the closing movement of the toggle, the joint of the toggle moves in a comparativel great upward are from A through points B and G and from point 0 passes in a small upward arc approximately a straight line through point D located in the dead center line'of the toggle to point E located beyond the dead center pressure should be applied as the toggle is passing from point C This loss of pressure is aggravated where a spring pad 17 is used.
y my invention, loss of pressure due to the use ofga spring pad and to the small upward are between the points C and E is compensated for by increasing the distance between the pivotal points 4 and 6, in addition to the distance between these points in a normal toggle when the toggle is straightened, and such increasing is brought about by the cam 3 at one of the pivots of the toggle and preferably the joint of the toggle.
In operationfthe operator after placing the garment to be pressed on the spring pad on the lower buck'12 either depresses the lever 14 by his foot in case a treadle is used or by letting the motive fluid in the cylinder 15. When the toggle reaches the point C, the arm 9 of the cam engages the shoulder 11 so that the cam is rotated to bring its major diameter nearly in line with the toggle so that the eflective length of the toggle is increased.
To open the press, power applied to the lever is discontinued or in case a treadle and latch is used, the latch is tripped by the the press head then being relieved of any force tendin to hold it down, opens partly by reaction 0? the spring pad 17 and counter-weight 18 and as the cam is in a position in which its major diameter is not quite in line with the dead center line of the toggle the reactive force tends to rotate the cam back to its normal position and break or open the toggle, the arm 9 fulcrumin of the cam.
What I claim is:
1. A toggle mechanism comprisin means for automatically extending the togg e as the said means includin an toggle straightens,
one of the links 0 'the eccentric on which toggle is mounted pivotal points of the toggle and means for autmaticall rotating the eccentric relatively to the togg e links as the toggle straightens.
2. A toggle mechanism comprising means for automatically extending the toggle as the toggle straightens said means includin an eccentric on which one of the links of the toggle is mounted and forming one of the pivotal points of the toggle and means for automatically rotating the eccentric relatively to the toggle links as the toggle straightens, the eccentric having an arm thereon and means arranged in the path of the arm to actuate it to rotate the eccentric as the toggle approaches a straight line.
3. A toggle mechanism comprising links pivoted together at theirinner ends and one being pivoted at its outer end to a fixed point at its outer end and the other being pivoted at its outer end to a movable part, one of the pivots being mounted to rotate about an eccentric axis and having an outwardly extending arm and means arranged in the path of the arm for causing relative rotative movement of-the pivot and the links as the links approach the dead center line of the toggle.
