COUPON CUTTER Filed April 19. 1929 I N VEN TOR.

A TTORNE Y.
Patented Aug. 4, 1931 UNITED STATES KIYOMOTO TAKAMATSU, OF TOKYO-FIT, JAPAN oourou CUTTER Application filed April 19, 1929, Serial This invention relates to a coupon cutter adapted to cut at a singleoperation several hundred sheets of interest coupons attached to bonds of any kind from a pile or stack of several hundred sheets of such bonds of any kind and has for its object the saving of time and labour in cutting off of such interest coupons from a great number of bonds by providing a cutting tool.
According to the practice hitherto, interest coupons attached to bonds are cut off of one or more sheets with scissors or knife, so that considerable time and labour is required for a great number of bonds, say sev- 5 eral hundred or thousand sheets. In order to remove such disadvantages, this invention provides an eflicient cutting tool by which the interest coupons may readily be cut ofi from a great number of the bonds at one time.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front view of the tool partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a side view partly in section.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the knife holder in perspective view partly in section.
Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line IVIV of Fig. 1, partly broken away.
Referring to the drawings, the column 1 with arm is fastened and mounted on the bench 2. Said column unites at its arm end with the housing 3. Extending through the housing 3 is journalled shaft 4 carrying pinion 5 within said housing. To the outwardly extending end of said shaft through said housing is fixed lever handle 6 by which the shaft may be turned. The cutter head 7 is provided (see Fig. 3) with a shank 8 having rack teeth 9 at its back side engaging with the pinion 5 and guides 10 at its front side. The cutter head 7 is held in position with its shank 8 in the housing 3 by extending through the bottom side thereof, the rack teeth 9 on the rear face of the shank engaging with the pinion while the spaced guides 10 on the front face of the shank slidably engage the opposite sides of a vertical slot in the front wall of the housing or casing 3, the said sides of the slot constituting No. 356,438, and in Japan May 5, 1928.
spaced guides 3., the engagement between the parts being maintained by the front removable covering plate 11 of the housing so that in consequence the cutter head 7 may be moved vertically by turning the handle lever 6 toward the front, as shown in Fig. 2. The cutter head 7 is fitted with two or more knives 12 adjoining at right angles with one another by means of the screws 13. The cutter head 7 carries the paper holdingdown plate 14 by means of the vertical spindles 15 secured thereto. The spring 16 is disposed around each spindle, resting its ends on the inner faces of said plate and the cutter head to normally hold the under face of said plate at the same level as the edges of the knives or slightly below them while the knives may be forced down to cut the coupons, said plate resting on the piled bonds 17 to hold them down by the spring tension. 18 is a plate of wood or lead set in the bench in order to prevent the edges of the knife from being damaged when it strikes against the bench.
In operation, the cutter head is raised by means of the handle and the coupons of the piled bonds to be cut are placed below the knives, aligning right angled cutting lines of the coupons with corresponding edges of two knives adjoining at right angles, and then the handle lever 6 is turned toward the front of the tool until the knives have cut all the coupons by the down motion of the cutter head 7 caused by "the turning of the pinion 5 engaging with the rack teeth 9.
Having now described in detail and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I claim:
A coupon cutter of the character described comprising a bench provided with a recess, a hollow column secured to and rising from the bench and having an offset arm at the upper end thereof, a casirig formed integral with the outer end of the arm and provided with aligning openings in the upper and lower walls thereof and also provided with a vertical slot in the front wall, the opposite sides of which constitute spaced vertical guides, a removable front cover plate for the housing, a shaft journalled transversely of the housing, a pinion on the shaft, a handle lever on the projecting end of the shaft for actuating the shaft, a cut.- ter head positioned above the recess in the bench, a shank rising from the head and provided with rack teeth on the rear face and with vertical guides on the front face-for respectively engaging the pinion and the vertical guides of the housing and the inner surface of the removable cover plate when the shank is arranged through the lower of the aligning openings in the housing, and an insert in the recess in the bench for coacting with the cutter head when the latter is depressed through the swinging of the handle.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
KI YOMOTO TAKAMATSU.
