CHARLES N. FOURNIER, or SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
ROTARY sAW GUARD.
Application filed August 5, 1924.. Serial No. 730,312.
This invention relates to guards for rotary saws and has for its object a particular simple and efficient means by which the operator is warned by his hand or fingers coming in contact with two guard members before his hands can come in contact with the saw.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed and table, the guard member being arranged in front of the saw so as to engage the workincludes a second guard member arranged on one side of the body and movable vertically, the second guard member also extending in front of the saw. 7 j
1 designates the rotary saw which may be of any suitable form, size and construction.
2 is the work table, the saw projecting through and above the table in the usual manner.
3 is the body of the saw guard, it being shown as carried by an arm 4 pivoted at 5 to a suitable support 6 and having a weight 7 which tends to counterbalance the body 3 so that the guard readily lifts off from the table when desired. The weight of the body is slightly greater than the weight 7, so that the body tends to rest on the table.
The body is here shown as formed with double or spaced apart walls 8 between which the saw extends.
The guard member at the advance end of the body 3 is a wheel or roller 9 arranged between the walls 8 and movable vertically relatively to the body, it being here shown as having axles 10 arranged in vertical slots 11 in the body.
12 is a second guard member mounted on one side of the body 3 or on the side on which the workman stands when attending the saw. The guard 12 is mounted to move vertically and is here shown as elongated and as resting on the table 2 and extending in front of the saw 3, and lapping the wheel 9. A
The guard 12 is also preferably formed with vertical slots 13 for receiving pins or studs 14 on the body 1, the ends of the studs being shown-as connected by a strap 15. Preferably the body also supports a separator strip or kerf spreader 16 adjustably secured thereto by a fastening member 17, this separator strip extending into the cut made by the saw in order to separate the piece sawed off from the board or other piece of work.
In operation, the board 18 is fed to the saw and pressed under the wheel 9, the wheel moving vertically in the slotsi-ll. As the board is fed to the saw, it also engages the lower edge of the guard 12 andlifts it relatively to the body 3. In the event, the operator has his hands on the work as it feeds to the saw, his hand will first engage the wheel 8 and if then he continues to maintain his hold on the work, he will receive a second warning by his hand coming in contact with the second guard 12.
19 is a rest pivoted at 20 to the front end of the body 3 and arranged to be moved from the inoperative position shown in full lines, Figure 1, into its operative position to engage the table 2 and hold the body 3 in an elevated position as shown in dotted lines.
The guard 12 as here shown is formed with an opening 21 through which, when the body 3 is in its elevated position on the'rest 19, the operator is enabled to determine the width of the cut to be made when resetting the gage block Without removing the saw guard.
l/Vhat I claim is:
1. The combination with a rotary saw,
' and a work table, the saw projecting through the table; of a work guard arranged above the table and over the saw and arranged to be moved vertically relatively to the table and the saw and a rest carried by the body and movable from an inoperative position into a position to engage the table and to hold the body in an elevated position.
2. The combination of a rotary saw, and a work table, the saw projecting above the work table, of a guard comprising a body arranged above the table and the saw and. having spaced apart walls providing a slot lengthwise thereof into which the sawprojects, a guard wheel carried bythe body in said slot in front of the saw and arranged to rest on the table and the. work, the wheel being mounted to move vertically relatively to the body, a second guard carried by the body along one side near the bottom there of and being mounted to. move vertically.
combination of a rotary saw, and
a Work table, the saw projecting above the.
work table, of aguard comprising a body arranged above the table and, thesaw. and having spaced apart walls providinga slot lengthwise thereof into whichthesaw pro: jects, a guard wheel carried bythebody in said slot in front of the saw and. arranged torest onthe table and the work, the wheel being mounted to move vertically relatively tojthe body, atkerf cutter. adjustably mounted in the back portion of the slot in said bo.dy,,said kerf cutter extending below the work table, a second guard carried by the ,bodyalong one side-near the bottom thereof and being mounted to be moved vertically relatively to the body, the second guard extendingin front of the sawnand being pro vided with an opening, and. a rest carried by the bodyand movable from an inoperativeposition into a position to engage. the table and to holdthe body in anelevated position.
In testimony. whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, atSyracuse, intthecounty of Onondaga, and State of New York, this th day of July, 1924.
CHARLES, N, FOURNIER.
