CHILDS GARMENT Filed Nov. 24, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet z INVENTOR. zfl/fl i055? 72s. BY I ATTORNEY Patented July 14, 1931 UNITED STATES ETHEL ROBERTS, or LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNI'A CHILDS GARMENT Application filed November 24, 1930. Serial No. 497,731.
which in turn are closed by a suitable crotch flap.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for fastening the various portions of the garment, and the flap, to-
gether. A further object is the provision of an elastic element at the point of combining the parts of the garment. To this end the invention consists in the combinations hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the appended drawings, of which:
Fig. 1 is a front or rear view of a garment embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is also a front, or rear, view sub stantially in a reement with Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, on a larger scale, illustrating the elastic element of the combination, an
Fig. 4 is a rear view of a modified shape of garment.
The garment of Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a body portion 1 and leg portions 2 and 3. The opening between the latter is shown closable by a flap 4. The vest portion is divided throughout its length, one side being provided with a row of buttons 5, 6, 7, for engaging a row of button holes 8 of the overlapping side edge. The flap 4 terminates in a tongue 9, provided with a button hole 10.
It is noticed that, when the garment is completely buttoned up, the tongue 9 of the flap engages the button 7, which latter in .this manner serves to combine the vest portion and the leg portions with the flap. Referring now to Fig. 3, it is noticed that the button 7 is not mounted directly on the reinforced edge of the vest, but that it is sewed on to a separate strip of fabric, 12 the upper and lower edges of which are sewed on to the edge of the vest. This strip, or band 12 should be made from any suitable strong and elastic material, capable of stretching considerably in response to movements of the wearers legs and body, thereby not only adding to the comfort of the child, but also serving to absorb strain on the button and the overlapping edges of the vest.
In Fig. 4 the rear view of an infants rompers is shown. The body portion, 20, of this garment is shown parted and the' overlapping edges are held together by a series of buttons, or fasteners 21, 22, 23. The lowermost button 23 is shown sewed on an elastic strip 24, which may be substantially p the equivalent of the aforenamed stri 12" The flap 25, which in this case is posit oned entirely on theback of the garment, is of a size substantially to cover the seat of the garment. Itterminates at points 26 and 27 on the back of the romper legs, and at the-" top in a tongue 28, provided with a button hole 29, for attachment to the button 23.
The length of the elastic band 12, or 24, would depend to a large extent upon the age of the infant, and also upon the weight and 1 strength of the material out of which the garment is made. But it is important to note, that it is fastened to the vest band only at the top and bottom in order that it may yield freely to the movements of the wearer. P
Whether the vest is open in front or in the rear is immaterial, as is the length of the flap, and whether the flap is only on the back or extending to the front. The importance of my invention resides in the single, elastic means for combining the parts of the garment.
I claim:
1. An infants garment, comprising an open front vest, provided at the adjoining edges with fasteners for interengagement to close the vest, a flap for closing the lower portion .of the garment, said flap being provided with a perforated tongue for engaging the bottom fastener, the said fastener being mounted on an elastic band, said band being fastened to one edge of the vest at thetop and bottom, leaving the center portion carrying the fastener free to yield. w
2. An infants garment, open lengthwise and provided with a flap for closing its open bottom, there being a series of buttons along one of the open edges of the garment for engagement by buttonholes of the adjoining edge, an elastic band fastened to the'edge of I.
the garment at the top and bottom and carrying in the middle the lower-most button, the said flap terminating in a tongue provided with a buttonhole for engagement also With said lower-most button, whereby the said lower-most button is capable of yielding to strains on the flap and on the combined edges of the garment.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
\ETHEL I ROBERTS.
