Description
SIMON HOOD, OF NEW YORK, N.Y.
IMPRQVEMENT IN CIGAR=BQXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,586, dated August 1, 1876; application filed June 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON H001), of th city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cigar-Box, of
which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved cigar-box, showing the same in open position; and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same when closed.
Similar letterspt' reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved cigarbox, which admits the convenient arranging of the cigars in bundles, the convenient exhibiting of the same, and the ready taking out for selling them.
The invention consists of a cigarbox the body of which is made of diagonally-tapering shape, with steps and guard-strips,'and closed by hinged side and front parts and lid.
In the drawing, A represents my improved cigar-box, Whose sides are cut down from the rear top edge diagonally toward the front, as
shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Box A is provided with horizontal shelves B, at suitable distances one above the other, which shelves are decreasing in width from the lower toward the uppermost shelf, and designed for placing thereon cigars in bundles offive, or otherwise, as desired.
The cigars are retained in position by lateral guardstrips O, that are arranged vertically above the front edge of each shelf, so as to pass across the front of the cigars and admit the taking out of any bundle without interfering with the remaining ones.
The box A is closed by means of folding side and front pieces D and D, which are hinged to each other and to the rear wall of the box, the top being closed by a hinged lid, E. The front sections D are closed by hook and eye, or other fastening device, a, and the lid and front sections nailed in addition for shipping. The front sections D are higher than the side sections D, for the thickness of the lid, to admit the more convenient fastening of the swinging front sections D to the lid and base-board of the box.
When the box is opened the front and side sections are swung back to be locked to each other at the rear of the box, or arranged sidewise of the same, to exhibit the labels thereon when the box is placed on the show case, both ways being shown in the perspective, Fig. l.
The side walls are slightly beveled or cut off at the upper rear corners, for the purpose of supporting the lid in upward inclined position when the side sections are placed in position at the rear of the box, bringing thereby the trade-mark, label, or fly-leaf prominently into View.
WVhen the box is opened, the bundles or cigars may be readily taken from the box until all are sold, the box forming a neat and attractive feature on the show-case, that serves to advertise the special brand sold therein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as'uew and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A cigar box made of a body out tapering or diagonally from front to rear, and provided with hinged and folding side and front sections and top lid, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. A cigar-box made of a shape tapering diagonally from front to rear, and having horizontal shelves of different height and lengths, and corresponding guard-strips in front and above each shelf, substantially as set forth.
