MIGHELL, DETROIT, IMIGHIGAN COMBINATION SHIPPING AND DISPLAY BOX Application filed October 20,.1930. Serial No. 4896L This invention rel'ates to a combination shipping and display box.
In the merchandising field it .is very cominch "to openly display such things as tooth paste, tooth brushes, cigarettes, medicines, candy, and the like. This custom has long since created :a need for :a box in which any of these articles can both be shipped and displayed. Various types of box structures very important items in this art; It is more particularly with this type of combined shipping and display box that this invention is concerned It is the object of this invention to produce a combined shipping and display box which comprises a container having a top which may be opened and amend having an openmg therein, and'an insert for the sald container which serves as a closure for the opening in the end of thecontainer when the same is used as a'shipping box and which may be tilted, when the container is used as a display box, to display a portion" of the.
merohandisevand to open the opening in the end of the container so that the merchandise removed from the tilted insert, as it is being sold, can :be replenished by Withdrawing merchandise from the inside of the casing through the opening 'in-jthe rear end.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View showing the combined shipping and display box when used as a shipping case. I
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same box when used for display purposes.
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the insert.
Fig.4 is a side elevation of the insert.
Figs. -5 and =6 are front and side elevations of'the insertwhen the box is used as a shipping boxas shown in Fig. 1.
Figs. 7 and 8 are front and side elevations of the insert when the box is used as a display case as shown in Fig. 2.
.In the drawing there is shown an outer containerl having a top'2. This container ispreterably made ofcardboard although it is understood that it can be made of wood sheet metal, and the like. Further the container 1 is preterably a collapsible container so that it can be shipped fiat but it can also be what is ilznown' :as :a set-up container, that is, one which is shipped already set up; The container 1 is shown as a setup container for convenience in description only since this eliminates many lines in-the drawing which would tend to detract from the .clearness of the disclosure. I
The container 1 consists of the front wall 3, the rear wallet, the side walls 5, the bottom .6, and the cover 2. As shownthe cover 2 is hing-ed to the rear wall 4 as at 7 and has a :flap 8 along the forward edge thereof which fits along the inside of the upper edge of the front wall 3 when the cover 2 is closed :as shown in Fig. 1. It-is understood that the container lycould .be'provided with any suitable cower since. the invention is not dependent rupon the type of cover used for the-container 1.
The rear wall 4 of the container is provided with an opening 9. This opening preferably extends from the bottom of the rear wall, that is, from the junction of the rear wall 4 with the bottom -6 upwardly a sufficient distance to permit the withdrawal of whatever articles of merchandise positioned within the container. 'The Width of the opening 9 is likewise .determin'edby the size of'the articles of merchandise contained within the container. V v
The container 1 is provided with an insert shown specifically in Figs. 3 to 8 This insert consists of a front flap 10, sl-Ielfpoftion 11., anda rear flap 12. The flaps 10 and 12 are hinged to the shelf 11 along the linesdimensions vary according to-the type of artainer 1 when, as shown, the flaps 10 and 12 ticles which are arranged to be displayed in the combined shipping and display box 1.
For descriptive purposes only, the container l'is shown of a size sufiicient to accommodate 12 boxes of tooth paste, three.
tiers of four each. Such a tooth paste box is shown at l6.- The container 1 in this instance is loaded with eight boxes such as shown at 16, four abreast and two tiers high. The insert'is then placed in the container 1 so that the front flap is flush against the inner face of the front 3 of the container.
The bottom edge of thefiap 1O rests upon the bottom 6 of the container 1. The rear flap,
12 is placed flush against the inside face of the rear wall 4 of the box 1 so that the bottom edge of the flap 12 rests upon the bottom 6 of the box. At thistime the rear flap 12 serves as a closure for the openingv 9. The shelf 11 is parallelto thebottom 6 of the con are of the same size. The ears 15 rest flush against theiinnerfaces of the side walls 5 of the container. Since the insert is preferably of cardboard-and the ears 15 arean integral tain amount of spring actionfto the flaps 12 ghe n they are bent to the position shown in ig.'1. After the box has been partially loaded and the insert positioned as shown in Fig. 1 the final tier of boxes'16 are placed upon the shelf 11. This final tier of boxes will be flush withthe upper edges of. the container.
At this time'the cover 2 is closed, as shown in Fig. 1, and thebox may be used for ship. ping purposes. When it 'is desired to display the goods forsa-le purposes, the-top of the cover 2 can be removed or opened as shown in Fig. 2. At this time the flap-12 may be slid upwardly so that the opening 9.
is opened and theqshelf 11 is tilted to the position shown in Figs. 2, 7, and 8. At
time the ears 15, owing to their SPI'lIlglCtlOIL.
spring outwardly as soon as they clear the upper edge ofthe sides'5, and'hence, by engaging the upper edge of the sides5, maintain the shelf-11 in tilted position and thusly the merchandise boxes16 are very nicely dis- 5e played owing to their tilted'position. Sales can be made from the upper tilted tierv of boxes resting on the shelf 11. The merchandise; on the inclined shelf-11. can be replenished by withdrawing mechandise from I within the container 1 beneath the shelf 11 through the opening 9.- It is evident'that the rear-flap 12 serves as a closure for the opening}? 'whenin lowered position, as a handle for raising the shelf 11 to tilted position, and also as a support for the shelf 11 and the merchandise supported thereby; 7
B is evident from the above description that there is here produced a combined shipping. and display case, one end of which has an opening therein, and an insert for the for. merchandise and the like comprising in combination a containerhaving an opening in a wall thereof, an'insert-for the said container having a shelf portion and a flap portion, the flap portion being arranged to slidably engage'within the said container and. in one position servingas a closure for the said opening and arranged to be slid to open the said opening and to tilt the shelf portion to better display the merchandise and permit removal of the merchandise from within the container through the said opening to repllleilifi'sh merchandise removed from the tilted sea.v 2.
