Description

March 17, 1931. v w, J, CAMPBELL 1,797,045
smcme MACHINE Filed July 5, 1929 Patented Mar. 17, 1931 sierra r FFECE TENT WILLIAM J. CAIVIPBELL, F INDIANAPOLIS, INDIAZTA, ASSIGNQR T0 AI EEBICAN SLICING IWAGHINE COIVIPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF,INEW YORK SLECING Ii'iACHINE Application filed July 3,
My invention relates to a slicing machine of the type in which a rotary knife is driven, preferably by motor, at relatively high speeds. One object of my invention is to provide means for protecting the transmission and particularly the belt drive of such a knife from the access of grease, dirt, meat particles and the like. Other objects will appear from time to time in the course of the specification and claims.
I illustrate my invention more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying draw ings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation with parts broken away,
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a detail.
Like parts are indicated by like symbols throughout the specification and drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A generally indicates any suitable base upon which is mounted the motor A with the motor shaft A and its pulley A B is'a rotary knife the front of which is recessed as at B and the rear as at B B is a knife shaft upon which the knife is mounted and B is a pulley associated with knife and shaft. B is a driving belt passing about the pulleys B and v The knife shaft is mounted in any suit able bearing, for example in the sleeve portion C mounted on the frame or base A. it includes the bearing portion proper, C and a bell shaped guard extension therefrom, C the edge of which penetrates the recess B as shown in Figure 2. C indicates a housing partition or wall associated with the sleeve C, apertured as at C to permit the passage therethrough of the pulley A lhe wall C is provided with a forwardly extending flange or wall C in proper shape to surround the drive, its general form being indicated, for example, in Figure 1. With the wall C protecting one side of the transmission and the wall C extending forwardly from it and the knife itself, in cooperation with the guard C protecting the pulley, I provide a further, and removable partition i or housing member generally indicated as D.
1929. Serial No. 375,603.
It may be secured to the wall C, as by the screws D It is secured to the lower portion of the guard C or to an adjacent portion of the housing, as at D It will be observed that it penetrates substantially within the periphery of the knifeand its inner edge may, if desired, be provided with a flange or rim D approaching or entering the recess 13 Under ordinary circumstances this flange or rim may be dispensed with, but under some circumstances it may be useful. In order to provide space for the motor shaft and the pulley A the member D may be outwardly offset as at D. W ien it is necessary to have access to the transmission, as when it is necessary to change the belt I may remove the knife, as by removal of its securing screw C. When the knife is removed the screws D D may be loosed and the plate 1) can then be removed.
In order further to limit the access of material to the interiorof the knife housing I provide the guard plate E, the arcuate edge E of which penetrates the forward recess B of the knife. The knife axis is tilted, as shown in Figure 2, in order to throw the cutting edge of the knife forwardly into the plane of the guard plate E. E is any suitable scraper, which may be mounted on the guard plate E, which engages the forward face of the knife and further reduces the tendency of material, grease and the like, to be carried into the interior of the knife housing.
It will be realized that whereas I have de scribed and shown a practical and operative device, nevertheless many changes might be made in the size, shape, number and disposition of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore wish my description and drawings to be taken as in a broad sense illustrative and diagrammatic rather than as limiting me to my specific showing.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows: I
In the slicing machine of the type herein shown it is advantageous to employ a belt of rubber. In slicing fatty meats, grease or lard fries out of the cold. bacon or ham.
Similarly, in cutting other meats, for example, hot meats, the juices are carriedabout the periphery of the knife. The rubber in the belt deteriorates seriously if any such grease, lard or juices, reach it. This condition is particularly disastrous with rubber belts, but belts of any material, such as leather, when such are used, are likely to deteriorate. And finally, regardless of the deterioration of the belts, and even where other driving means are employed, it is extremely disadvantageous to have grease, lard, meat juices, fragments and scraps of meat carried into the interior of the device. They not only interfere with the drive, but develop an unsanitary condition. In the present knife most of the grease, lard and the like is scraped off by the scraper B so far as concerns the front of the knife. The little that remains may be carried on the periphery of the knife into the interior of the knif housing and to the rear of the guard plate E. It cannot reach the transmis ion or go any farther because the partition D, which overlaps the knife, forms a complete closure for the transmission housing formed by the walls C and C Owing to the speed of r tat-ion of the knife any such grease, juices and fragments if discharged from the knife, are thrown centrifugally from the knife edge. They cannot crawl back in toward the knife axis and therefore cannot penetrate the space to the rear of the partition D. The partition D and wall C further prevent particles from .the sharpening elements G G when in use,
to enter the transmission.
I claim:
1. A slicing machine including a rotary knife and a motor adapted to drive the knife, a removable guard plate for the forward face of the knife, pulleys associated with knife and motor and a driving belt connecting them and shielding means adapted to prevent the access to said belt of material cut by the knife,
including a removable shield element, be-
tween knife and belt, overlying the belt and the motor pulley and extending a substantial distance within the periphery of the knife and toward its axis of rotation.
2. In a slicing machine, a motor, a rotary knife, a driving connection between knife and motor, a guard plate adapted to mask the forward face of the knife, and a removable partition member, to the rear of said guard plate, positioned between the knife and the said driving connection.
3. In a slicing machine, a motor, a rotary knife, a driving connection between knife and motor, a removable guard plate for the forward face of the knife, and a separately removable partition plate, to the rear of said guard plate, intermediate the knife and the driving connection.
4, In a slicing machine, a motor, a rotary knife, a driving connection between knife and motor, a removable guard plate for the forward face of the knife, and a separately removable partition plate, intermediate the knife and the driving connection.
5. A slicing machine including a knife and a motor adapted to actuate it, a removable guard plate for the forward face of the knife, a transmission intermediate said knife and motor, and shielding means adapted to prevent the access to said transmission of material cut by the knife, which includes a removable shield element positioned between the knife and transmission and extending a substantial distance within the periphery of the knife and overlapping the face of the knife.
6. In a slicing machine which includes a knife and means for actuating it, and a motor therefor, a transmission intermediate said knife and motor, a housing adapted substantially to enclose said knife, said transmission being positioned within said housing, and interior guard means, within said housing, positioned between said transmission and said knife.
7. In a slicing machine, a motor, a rotary knife, a driving connection between knife and motor, a guard plate adapted to mask the forward face of the knife, and a removable partition member, to the rear of said guard plate, positioned between the knife and the motor.
8. In a slicing machine which includes a rotary knife, a motor therefor and a trans mission between knife and motor, a guard plate adapted to mask the forward face of the knife and an intermediate protecting plate interposed between the rear face of the knife and the transmission, said intermediate plate, overlapping the face of the knife and terminating between the periphery and the axis of the knife.
