Description
UNITED STATES ORRIN L. JENKS, OF PORT HURON, MICHIGAN.
PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIRCULAR-SAW MILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,3 [8, dated June 27, 1876} application filed August 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ORRIN L. JENKs, of Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Circular-Saw Mills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
It has hitherto been found impracticable to use circular saws in gangs, for the purpose of sawing an entire log into lumber by one passage of the saws through it, on account of the tendency of the saws to heat, and thereby lose their rigidity and change their linear integrity. This tendency to heat is caused by the pressure and friction, upon both sides of each saw, of the lumber which is being cut, which tendency is far more marked than in the use of a single saw, which, in cutting, has upon one side only the pressure of a single board, which board, in practice, is wedged apart, if necessary.
Many efforts have been made to use circular saws in gangs for sawing lumber, in order to make use of the momentum of the saws moving always in the same direction, and thus avoid the loss of the power required in reciprocating saws to overcome the inertia at the end of each stroke.
The purpose of my invention being the use of circular saws in gangs for sawing lumber, the invention therein consists in the means, hereinafter described, for applying small jets of water continuously to the surfaces of saws in a gang; in the water being discharged through a series of tubes provided with perforations near their upper ends, and connecting with a suitable water-supply, all as more fully hereinafter explained.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I proceed to describe the same more particularly, having reference to the drawings, making part of this specification, wherein the figure represents a front elevation of a gangof saws in position, with the sprinkling device arranged for use.
In the drawings, the circular saws A, in any number required for use, and of any ordinary or usual construction, are placed and secured in any convenient Way upon the arbor, and separated the proper distances apart by movable annular collars O. The arbor is secured upon an ordinary shaft, D, which turns in proper boxes, and, for convenience in removing and replacing the saws, the arbor, at the opposite end, isjournaled and turns upon a short rigid arm, E. A water-pipe, G, is placed in any convenient position, under or by the side of the saws, out of the way of the logs to be sawed, and is furnished with hollow fingersf, extending up between the saws, and provided with perforations for the discharge of water upon the saws.
The advantages of my construction are too obvious upon inspection to need particular statement.
What therefore I claim as my invention, and Wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with circular saws arranged in a gang, a series of tubes provided with perforations near their upper ends, and a connecting supply water-pipe, for the purpose of discharging jets of water continuously upon each side of such saws, substantially as described and shown.
This specification signed and witnessed this 26th day of August, 1875.
v ORRIN L. JENKS. Witnesses:
CHARLES THURMAN, R. N. DYER.
