N. PEYERs, PHOTO LIT NrrED STATES PATENT GEORGE E. OOKERSHAUSEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUGAR-SAWING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,403, dated August 3, 1875; application filed July 1, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. OGKER- SHAUSEN, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented an Improved Machine for Sawing Sugar; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to a machine for cutting loaf-sugar into slabs; and it consists in a novel construction, arrangement, and combination, with a gang of saws, of a grooved or slotted carriage, provided with a seat for the sugar, and a series of flanged rollers supporting the carriage, whereby the sugar is held in place upon the carriage, and is cut into slabs of regular and uniform thickness, and the carriage is guided in its travel to and fro, and protected from contact with the saws.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a machine constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken in the line y y of Fig. 2.
A represents a frame-work of any suitable construction, in. which is journaled in bearings c a shaft or saw-arbor, B, carrying a gang of saws, O, and provided with a driving-pulley, b. In the frame A, parallel with the saw shaft, two or more rollers, D, are journaled in bearings e. WVhen only two rollers are employed, they are placed one near one end of the frame, and one near the other end, or between the saws and the ends of the frame. Each of the rollers D is provided with a num ber of flanges or collars, d, at regular distances from each other, and in line with the saws O. The carriage F is constructed with a number oflon gitudinal slots, f, parallel with each other, and of a width corresponding with the thickness of the flanges or collar (1, sufficiently near to allow said flanges or collars to fit easily in said slots. The length of the slots f is about equal to, or slightly greater than, the diameter of the saws together with the length of the sugar loaf. On the under side of the carriage the slots may terminate in grooves g in the end pieces of said carriage, as shown in Fig. 1. Near one end of the carriage a recess or depression is formed in the slotted portion, which serves as a seat, h, for the sugar loaf 'l.
The carriage being in place upon the rollers D, and motion being imparted to the saw-shaft. the sugar loaf 2' is placed in the seat h, and the carriage is moved toward the saws, either by hand or by mechanism of any suitable description. When moved by hand, the attendant stands near the end of the carriage which carries the loaf, and feeds it to the loaf until the cutting of the loaf into slabs is completed, after which the carriage is moved in a reverse direction, the slabs removed, another loaf placed in the seat, and the operation repeated. The saws pass through the slots f, which, being wider than the thickness of the saws, allow them to play freely therein without coming in contact with the carriage; While the engagement of said slots and the grooves g with the flanges or collars cl insures the proper guiding of the carriage and the parallel and uniform cutting of the slabs.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the series of circular saws O, of the carriage F, provided with a series of parallel slots, f, and a cavity, h, near one end, for receiving and holding the sugar loaf, and constructed to be moved over the saws, in order to 'present the sugar loaf to the same for severing it into slabs, substantially as shown and described.
:5. The combination of the carriage F, provided with the slots f and grooves g, and the rollers D, provided with the guide flanges or collars 61, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
GEORGE P. ()GKERSHAUSEN.
