Description
Dec. 9, 1930.
G v. T. WASHINGTON FILING CABINET Filed Jan. 13, 1927 v Atmrng' Patented Dec. 9, 1930 PATENT OFFICE 1 GEORGE TONY WASHINGTON, OF RUSSELL, KENTUCKY FILING CABINET Application filed January 13, 1927. Serial No. 160,926.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in filing cabinets and has for its primary object to provide a cabinet constructed throughout substantially its entire length with relatively elongated and vertically stepped pockets for receiving large forms such as those employed in the insurance business and the like.
A further and most important object is to provide a filing cabinet of this character that is extremely simple of construction,.inexpensive of manufacture and highly well adapted for the filing of forms and other papers.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in both of the views:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a filing cab- 1 inet constructed in accordance with the present invention the sliding door being disclosed as in open position, and V Figure 2 is an enlarged detail vertical section through the device.
Now having particular reference to the pair of end walls 5--5, a sheet metal bottom wall 6, a top wall 7, and sheet metal back wall 8 that terminates considerably above the bottom wall 6 and beneath which is mounted so a swinging door 9. The outer edges of the end walls 5-5 are inclined throughout the major portion of their length as clearly disclosed in Figure 2, while the inner face of each end wall 5 is formed adjacent its outer edge with a channel 10 that communicates with a vertical channel 11 in spaced relation with the sheet metal back wall 8 for the purpose of providing a guide for the adjacent edge of a hinged sectional rolling door 12 operatively connected at its inner end to a spring roller 13 of conventional construction.
As disclosed in Figure 2, this roller 13 is mounted horizontally in any desirable manner between the end walls 55 and directly above a horizontal partition wall 14 at the lower end of the sheet metal back wall 8.
Directly beneath this partition wall 14 is a horizontal wall 15 for providing a pair of compartments A and B within the cabinet,
drawing my novel filing cabinet consists of a access towhich may be had by opening the door 9.
Arranged in stepped relation between the end walls 55 directly inwardly of the slots 10 thereof are vertically extending filing pockets 16 preferably formed of sheet metal strips, the lower edges of which are bent outwardly at right angles as at 17 so as to maintain these pockets closed at their lower ends and also to assist in maintaining the spaced relation of said pockets.
It will therefore be seen that I have provided a highly novel, simple, and eificient filing cabinet that is well adapted for all the purposes heretofore designated and even v though I have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of certain detailed structural elements it is nevertheless to be understood that changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope 7 of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is In a file cabinet of the'class described, a casing including a bottom, a pair of end walls, a top, and a back wall which extends downwardly from the top to the intermediate por- I tion of the casing, the front side of the casing being open, a series of vertically arranged stepped pockets secured between the end Walls of the casing adjacent the open front side thereof, a horizontal partition arranged between the lower edge of the rear wall and the intermediate portion of said pocket for dividing the cabinet into upper and lower compartments in the rear of the pockets, a spring drum mounted between the end walls in the lower portion of the upper compartment, a sectional rolling lid attached at one end to the roller and adapted to be extended downwardly between the end walls in front of the pockets to cover the same when in one posi- 1 tion, said lid being confined in the upper compartment when in a rolled position, and a swinging closure arranged between the end walls and between the lower edge of the back wall and the bottom of the casing whereby access to the lower compartment may be had.
In testimony whereof I aflix 111 Si nature.
GEORGE TONY WASH NG ON.
