Be it lo'ic-wn that I, LOUIS D. Essen, a citizen of the United States, residing at iChicage, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, ha 'e invented certain new and useful Improvements in News-Stands, ofjwhich the following is aspecifica-tion.

This invention relates to news stands, and more particularly to a news-stand ofsheet metal construction provided with special closure means. v

One of the main objects of the invention is to provide anews-stand of simple construction which may be produced at lowcost, having a top and a cover cooperating therewith so constructed as to effectually prevent the entry of moisture into the interior of the same. A further object is to provide a cover which cooperates with the top of the "casing or body portion of the news-stand so as to effect a moisture proof closure therewith when the cover is in lowered position. A still further object is to provide a retaining plate for articles placed on a shelf within the casing, this plate being so mounted as to provide means for securing the cover'in closed position. Further objects .will appear from the detail description.

The casing designated generallyby A is of substantially rectangular or box shape. This casing is provided, at each end, with the semi-elliptical angle frame 1. An end plate 2 is secured to each of these frames and cooperates with the front plate 3 and back plate 4:, which are also secured to the end frames, to form the body of the casing. One of the end plates 2 is provided with a suitable opening which is normally closed by a door 5 hingedly secured at one end to one leg of one of the end frames, as at 6. This door is provided, at its other end with a hasp 7 which fits about. a staple 8 secured to the Specification of Letters Patent.

other leg of end frame 1, this staple being adapted to receive the bolt of a loci: 9 for securing purposes. A shelf 10 is secured in casing A at the upper edge of front wall 3 and cooperates with the bottom 11 of the casing to provide a. storage space for the papers kept in stock.

- Back plate 4 is extended and secured to the upper portion of each of the end frames 1 to provide a rounded top 1.2. The upper edge portion of top 12 is turned upward and outward to provide a 'rearwardly directed bead 13 which isada-pted to cooperate with an oppositely directed bead 14 provided at the rearward edge of the closure member or cover 15. This cover is formed from. sheet metal of suitable gage and is slidably' mounted, at eachend, in angular guide members 16 which are mounted in concentric spaced relation to the upper portions of end frame 1.

These members provide guide ways which extend above the top 12 of the casing. As will be noted more particularly from Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawing, members 16 are extended to provide vertical guide members-16 at the front of the casing, for the purpose which will be later disclosed.

A flat rectangular plate 17 is slida-bly mounted at each end-in the guide members 16 The upward movement of this plate in members 16 is positively limited by the round or arcuate shape of the members 16. A hasp 18 is secured to cover 15 at the "center thereof. This hasp is so bent as to fit about the tubular bead or roll 19 provided at the front edge of cover 15. Hasp 18 cooperates with a staple secured in the plate to provide means for securing the cover to plate 17. As the upward movement of the plate is positively limited, the cover may be thus effectually secured in closed position. Vhen the cover is raised, plate 17 may be forced upward into the guide ways of members 16 so as to have its end portions slightly distorted. This causes the plate to jam or bind in the guide members so as to be frictionally secured in raised position. In this position the upper edge portion of theplate projects above the shelf 10 so as to provide a retaining member for articles placed upon the shelf.

hen the cover is. in lowered or closed v position the beads 13 and 14 are in interlocking engagement and serve to provide a double moisture proof closure at the top of the casing, the cover. and top 12 forming'a practically continuous rounded surface which will readily shed any moisture which .may collectupon the same. In addition, the

beads serve to positively prevent the cover from being moved downward too far, thus efl'ectually eliminating all danger of jamt ing or binding of the cover in the guide members.

What I claim is:

.1. A stand for newspapers having a casi'ng provided with a rounded top, and a cover slidably mounted above the top, the said top and cover being provided at their for- Ward and rearward edges, respectively, with oppositely directed beads adapted to interengage so as to form a moisture tight closure and to positively limit movement of the cover, when said cover is moved into closed position. i i
