IMPROVEMENT IN POR TFOLIOS.

' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [77,748, dated May 23, 1876 application filed April 4, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, J HN QUENZER, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, and CHARLES QUENZER, of Brook-' lyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Portfolios, of which the following is a specification Figure l is a perspective view of our improved device closed for carriage. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section, of the same opened out for use as a writing-desk.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved case, designed especially for the use of school children, and which shall be so constructed as to enable them to carry their books, slate, paper, pencils, pen-holder, ruler, &c., in a safe and convenient manner, and which may be opened out for use as a writing-desk without its being necessary to remove the books and other articles.

The invention consists in an improved portable book-case, formed of the bottom, back, and

ends, rigidly connected together, the front hinged at its lower edge to the forward edge of the bottom, the cover hinged at its rear edge to the upper edge of the back, and having a flap formed-upon'its forward edge, the pocket, the tapes, and the bail, as hereinafter fully described.

The case is made rectangularin form, and its bottom A, back B, and ends 0 are rigidly connected together. D is the front of the .case, which is hingedfat its lower edge to the forward edge of the bottom A. E is the cover, which is hinged at its rear edge to the upper edge of the back B, and has a flap, F, formed upon its forward edge, to overlap the upper part of the forward side D of the case. The flap F is secured to the front D by a lock or other convenient fastening. Upon the inner side of the back B is secured a pocket, G, to

receive paper, Writing-books, drawing-bo0ks, 85c. The inner side of the cover E is faced with velvet, plush, or other suitable material, and to it, at or near its side edges, are attached the ends of two or more cross-tapes, H, to receive the pencils, pen-holder, ruler, &c. The inner side of the front D is faced with velvet, plush, or some other suitable material, so that when thecase is laid upon a table the said front may be turned down to serve as a writing-desk without its being necessary to remove the books from it. To the upper parts of the ends 0 are attached the ends of a bail or handle, I, for carrying the case.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

An improved portable book-case, formed of the bottom, back, and ends, rigidly connected together, the front 1), hinged at its lower edge to the forward edge of the bottom, the cover E, hinged atits rear edge to the upper edge of the back B, and having a flap, F, formed upon its forward edge, the pocket G, the tapes H, and the bail I, substantially as herein shown and described.
