IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR DRYING HIDES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,1 ll, dated May 9, 1876; application filed March 25, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN FINNIGAN,0f Houston, county of Harris, and State of Texas, have invented an Improvement in Drying Hides, of which the following is a specifica' tion:

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved portable frame. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line a: m, Fig. l.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the drying of the hides of cattle and other process, and does very well when there is no rain, but continuous bad weather would spoil them. By my mode of drying the hides I spread them over portable frames so constructed that their sides cannot touch each other. This requires much less labor than the old plan, requires much less space, and prevents them from being spoiled by bad weather.

A are two pairs of inclined posts or legs, the upper ends of which are rounded off, and are attached to the opposite sides of the ends ofa bar, B. To the sides of the bar B are attached angular strips 0, against the edges of which the hides rest to preventthem from resting upon the flat sides of the said bar B. To one end of bar B is attached a short cross-bar, I), to the ends of which the headof the hide is designed to be attached, to keep it extended in proper position to receive the rays of the sun, and to prevent it from sagging down and not drying properly. The head of the hide is the most difficult to dry; but by securing it in this way, and arranging the frames with the heads of the hides to the north, the said heads will be exposed to the rays of the sun for almost the Whole day. The legs A of each end are connected by cross-bars D, and the legs A of each side are connected by longitudinal bars E, the ends of which project to serve as handles for carrying the frame. The ends of the bars E also serve as supports for the legs of the hides to be attached to, to secure them in proper position, and prevent them from curling up while drying.

The frames thus constructed keep the inner surfaces of the hides from coming in contact with each other, allow the air to circulate between its sides freely, and allow the rain to run off, so that bad weather will not harmthem.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The frame formed of the legs A, the top bar B, the angular side bars 0, the head-bar b, the cross-bars D, and the longitudinal bars E, to adapt it for use in dryinghides, substantially as herein shown and described.
