COMBINED TENT AND BED.
SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,593, dated June 19, 1883.
` Application filed April 9, 1883. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, MITCHEL PEREZ, a citi` zen of the United States, residing atHouston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Combined Tent and Bed, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a combined folding bed and tent; and it consists in certain im- .provements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure lis a perspective view ofthe frame of my improved combined bed and tent extended. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bed. Fig. 3 is aperspective view of the tent. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the tent partly folded. Fig. 5 is an end view of the bed. Fig. l6 is a plan view of the bed-covering. Fig. 7 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the tent, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the frame folded for stor- .age or transportation.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the gures.
The frame of my improved combined bed and tent is composedV of eight pieces or strips of suitable dimensions, designated in the drawings A A, B B, C C, and D D, respectively. The strips B B are connected to the strips C C by hinges E E,the pintles of which, F, are on the under sides of said strips or bars, so that when opened. the ends of said bars shall abut against each other, as clearly shown in Fig. l ofthe drawings. The strips A A are hinged to the outer ends of the strips B B in such a manner as to open upwardly; and the strips D D are in like manner connected to the outer ends ofthe strips C C." The pintles F of the hinges E are extended outwardly, as shown, so as to form studs G, provided with slots H, in which are hinged legs or supports I. By this constructionthe said legs or'supports are swiveled,'so that when the frame is folded the said legs may be turned up alongside the framepieces. ,The outer sides of the frame bars A and D are provided with swiveled studs J, located a'short distance from the hinges K. Legs L are hinged to the studs J, and adapted to be adjusted under hooks M, which serve to brace said legs and hold them securely when the frame is extended forl operation. The frame-barsA A and D D, respectively, are connected at their outer ends byhinges N. Of the frame-bars A and D, respectively, one i`s provided with a pivoted hook or brace, O,
adapted to be hooked over a stud, P, securedto 4the bed-covering S. The latter consists of a strip of canvas or other suitable material, of the proper width andlength, and having tapering'ends T T. The said covering-strip is provided with cords U, or other suitable means for attaching it to the frame when the latter is extended for operation. A tent-covering, V, is also provided, which consists of a square or rectangular piece of canvas or other suitable material of the desired dimensions.
The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. When theframe is extended the bars B B and C C form the sides, andthe bars AA and D D -are turned up at right angles to "said sides, forming triangular or pointed ends. The frame is supported upon the legs, which are extended, as shown, and the pivoted hooks or braces serve to hold the parts of the frame inthe proper position in relation to each other. The bed-covering is secured to the sides of the frame and at the corners of the latter, and the tapering ends of said covering are passed over the braces O at the triangular end portions and made fast, thus making a hammock-like and very comfortable bed.
The upper corners of the triangular end portions of the frame may be connected by a rope, W, over which the tent-covering V may be stretched, as shown in the drawings.
The bed and tent may be used together or independently, as may be desired.
If, while the tent and bed coverings are stretched, it is desired to fold the device for the day, without detaching the said coverings, this may be done, as shown in Fig. 4, by sim- IOO ply elevating the central portions of the sides of the frame. For storage or transportation the frame may be folded into a very compact shape, as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings. 5 I claim as niy invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States" l. The combination, with lthe frame coinposed of the bars A A, B B, C C, and DD,
hinged together, as herein described, of the 1o central legs or supports hinged to the outer pivoted to the inner frame-bars and adapted to be hooked over the'swiveled studs, as set forth.
8. The combination of the herein-described folding frame, comprising the bars A A, B B, C C, and D D, hinged together in the manner shown, the legs I and L, hinged, as described,
-to swiveled studs, and the braces O and Q, all
arranged and operating substantially as and 25 4for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in, presence of two Witnesses.
MITCHEL PEREZ.
