As may be understood from the'above dessignation, this invention relates to devices suitable for use in holding closure elements, such as Windows,-in a predetermined opened or closed position; and it is a particular object of my invention, using a curved and/or sectional rod and securing an outer end thereof, by means such as a suitable fitting, toe casement window or other closure, to provide means whereby said window or closure may be manipulated through an interposed screen, or the like; and whereby said window or closure may be securely, even though yieldably, held in a predetermined open position.
It is a further object of my invention, employing a curved or other rod whose sections may be interconnected by a horizontal pivot pin (or by a pivot Whose axis lies in a plane substantially at right angles to an axis upon which the window or other closure may be pivoted) with an apertured' rod-engaging or clamp means through which the-pivotal con nection between the mentioned rod sections can pass; and, in preferred embodiments of my invention, an outer rod section being pivoted at its outer end and an inner rod section being provided with a handle, said inner rod section may be dropped, under the action of gravity, to a position wherein it serves as a latch, to prevent opening of said Window.
As implied above, it is an object of this invention to provide a window organization which shall include, in addition to' a window and a jamb, a frame carrying an ordinary fly-wire screen, the latter being disposed in a plane parallel with that of a window sash,preferably pivoted upon a substantially vertical axis; and, unlessthe mentioned sections of the rod employed to manipulate said window are curved and secured concentrically with the axis upon which said window is pivoted, I may not only provide for a pivotal connection, upon an axis parallel with the last mentioned'axis, between, a window-attached fitting or bracket and the outer end of an outermost rod section, but,-I may also, in case the mentioned clamping organization comprises a fixed body receiving a set screw, so aperture the mentioned fixed body as to permit the respective sections of said rod to assume various angular relationships thereto; and I may also provide the mentioned screen frame with not only an open ing such as a'notch, through which-said rod sections may slide, but also with a movable partial cover and means for the pivotal slipport thereof in a dependent and/or rod-enclosing position. p
Other objects of myinvention may be best appreciated from the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof, taken in connection with the appended claims and accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 may be regarded as a horizontal sectional view, taken substantially as indicated by the line 1-1 of Fig. 2,v with parts eliminated or broken away.

Referring to details of that specific embodiment of my poses of illustration, a closure element 1 1 is shown, as comprising asash' 12 provided with a pane of glass 13 and movably secured, by hinges 14:, to an apertured-wall provided with a jamb organization 15. The same jainb organization is shown as receiving also a screen frame 16 and it will be understood that my invention relates more particularly to means for adjusting and securing the window 11', or an equivalent closure element or organization assumed to occupy an outer position, without disturbing the mentioned screen, or an equivalent inner element or organ' zation;
For the purpose last referred to, assuming invention chosen for purthe sash 12 and the frame 16 to be disposed in parallel relationship when the window 11 is closed, I may secure to said sash, as by means of screws 17, a bracket or other fitting 18, adapted to support the outer end of a sectional or other rod 19; and I may provide the frame 16 with a notch or other opening, such as that indicated by the dotted lines at 20, Figs. 1 and 8, through which the rod 19, or its equivalent, is slidably movable.
I show the rod 19 as comprising an outer section 21 and an inner section 22, these sections being shown as pivoted together by a pin 23, disposed in a planesubstantially at right angles to the axis of pivot pins 24 (the latter being presumably vertical, in the illustrated embodiment of my invention) upon which the sash 12, or its equivalent is pivotal ly supported by means of hinges 14.
Even if the rod sections 21 and 22 have a curvature approximately concentric with the pin or axis 24 of the hinges 14, I prefer to connect the outer end of the outer rod section 21 with the bracket 18, or its equivalent, by means such as an additional pivot pin 25, substantially parallel with the pin or axis 24 of the hinges 14; and, in order to adapt the inner and longer section 22 of the rod 19 to be swung (as under the action of gravity) to an out-of-the-way position such as that indicated in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2. I prefer to adapt the pin 23 (lying in a plane at right angles to the pin 25) to pass through an aperture 26 in a fixed element 27 of a clamp organization 28,which may comprise also a set screw 29 having a knurled head 30.
In case the rod 19 is not so curved and secured that all parts thereof may remain equidistant from the hinge pivot 24, or the like, upon which the window 11, or its equivalent, is assumed to be pivotally movable (presumably in a horizontal plane, in the case illustrated) the opening 26 should. in case the body 27 is not rotatably mounted, be elliptical or otherwise so shaped as to permit the direction of the longitudinal axis of said body to vary during its sliding movement therethrough.
The inner rod section 22 may be provided with a handle 31, movable between positions such as are suggested at 31 and at 31"; but the handle 31 (unlike the hinge provided at 23) is preferably of such form and size as to prevent its being drawn through the notch 20 in frame 16, or through the clamp 28, in case the latter is provided and secured thereon or inwardly thereof.
I nevertheless prefer to provide the notch 20 with fly-excluding closure means such as a dependent partial cover 32,this element being shown as pivoted on a screw 33, as comprising an expanded bottom portion 34 to cover the notch 20, and as provided with 2.
rod-passing opening in the form of a lesser notch 35.
The mentioned releasable clamping means 28, shown as comprising a circular plate 36, (which may be secured inwardly, with reference to the frame 16, by means such as screws 37 shown as extending into a horizontal window frame element 38) may be so positioned as to permit the handle 31 to drop or swing, for a latching effect, into a vertical or other plan substantially at right angles to a plane (assumed to be horizontal in the present illustration) in which the outer rod section 21 may be compelled to remaim-as by reason of the vertical direction of the pin 25 and/or the horizontal direction of the opening 26 through the clamp 28. But, when a window is to be adjusted or held open, the screw 29 being slightly withdrawn to permit a sliding movement of the rod 19, a push upon the handle 31, after the inner rod sec- 7 tion 22 is rendered substantially coaxial or continuous with the outer rod section 21, may be efiective to open the window or other closure 11 to any desired degree; and a ti ghtening of the screw 29 may then be reliedupon, in view of the verticality of the pin 25 and the h'orizontality of the opening 26 (in the illustrated example) to hold the sections 21 and 22 of the rod 19 in alignmen.t,-even though the curvature of said rod may allow the closure 11 yieldably to swing, to a limited extent and ma manner obviating damage thereto, in case the said closure element should be accidentally hit by a passing ol Ject.
hen a window is to be closed, it will be understood that the handle 31, or its equivalent. may be shifted from the position indicated at31', or from any intermediate position, toward the position indicated at 31", and that the rod 19 may be then broken, for a latching effect, by swinging the inner section 22 into a downward or other out-ofthe-way inner position, such as that indicated in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2.
Although I have herein described my window adjuster and latch with particular reference to the employment of the same upon casement windows, and with particular reference to the use of a rod comprising curved sections which are so pivoted together as to permit a joint or hinge therebetween to pass through a clamping organization disposed within a screen (the pivots at the opposite ends of an outer rod section being disposed, when both ends are pivoted, in nonparallel planes) it should be understood not only that various features of my invention might be independently employed but also that=numerous modifications thereof might easily be devised, by others skilled in the arts to which this case relates, without the slightest departure from the spirit and scope of my invention, as the same is indicated above and in the following claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In means for fixing the position of a movable closure: a fitting secured to said closure; a curved sectional rod connected with said fitting; and releasable means for so clamping a section of said rod as to hold said closure in a predetermined opened position,sect-ions of said rod being pivotally interconnected in such manner as to permit an uninterrupted advance or retraction of the pivotal connection therebetween through an aperture in said clamping means.
2. In means for fixing the position of a movable closure: a fitting secured to said closure a curved sectional rod connected with said fitting; and releasable means for so clamping a section of said rod as to hold said closure in a predetermined opened position, an outer section of said rod being pivoted to said fitting in such manner as to permit relative movement therebetween in but one plane.
3. In means for fixing the posit-ion of a movable closure: a fitting secured to said closure; a curved sectional round rod connected With said fitting; and releasable means for so clamping a section of said rod as to hold said closure in a predetermined opened position,said closure being pivoted; and the respective sections of said rod being pivoted together by a pin extending substantially at right angles to an axis upon which said closure is pivoted, through an interfitting tongue and slot joint formed integrally in said sections.
4.. In means for fixing the position of a movable closure: a fitting secured to said closure; a curved sectional round rod connected with said fitting and adapted to slide freely through a clamping organization; and releasable means for so clamping a section of said rod as to hold said closure in a predetermined opened position,an inner section of said rod being so connected with an outer section thereof as to permit said inner section, when retracted, to swing to a fastening position.
5. A closure positioning organization comprising: a curved rodcomposed of sections and adapted to be mounted on a closure element; section joining means interposed between said rod sections and adapted to move freely through a releasable rod clamping organization.
6. A closure positioning organization comprising: a curved rod composed of sections and adapted to be mounted on a closure ereinent; section joining means interposed be tween said rod sections and adapted to move freely through a releasable rod clamping organization, and a positionally fixed rod clamping organization adapted to slidably receive said rod.
7 A closure positioning organization comprising: acurved rod composed of sections and adapted to be mounted on a closure element; section joining meansinterposed between said rod sections and adapted to move freely through a releasable rod clamping organization, and a positionally fixed rod clamping organization adapted to slidably receive said rod,said joining means comprising a pivot member, which permits relative movement between said sections in but one plane.
8. A closure positioning organization comprising: a curved rod member, composed of sections and adapted to be pivotally mounted on a closure element; rod securing means mounted on said closure element, pivotally engaged with said rod member; pivoted section joining means adapted to slide freely through a releasable rod clamping organiza tion, and a positionally fixed rod clamping organization adapted to receive said rod member.
9. A closure positioning organization comprising: a curved rod composed of a plurality of sections; pivotal means connecting said sections operable to permit relative movement between said sections in but one plane, said pivotal means being alternately arranged with their respective. planes of movement at right angles and adapted to move freely through a releasable rod clamping organization.
10. A closure positioning organization comprising: a curved rod composed of a plurality of sections; pivotal means connecting said sections operable to permit relative movement between said sections in but one plane, said pivotal means being alternately arranged with their respective planes of movement at right angles and adapted to move freely through a releasable rod clamping organization; and a positionally fixed rod clamping organization adapted to slidably receive said rod.
11. A closure positioning organization comprising: a curved rod composed of a plurality of sections; pivotal means connecting said sections operable to permit relative movement between said sections in but one plane, said pivotal means being alternately arranged with their respective planes of movement at right angles and adapted to move freely through a releasable rod clamping organization; and a positionally fixed rod clamping organization adapted .to slidably receive said rod, the inner section of said rod being so connected to the outer section thereof as to permit said inner section, when retracted, to swing to a holding postion.
