MoNivInR, F ALeoNAo, MICHIGAN WINDING DRUM AND MEANS FOR FASTENING HOISTING CABLES TI-IERETO Application filed. April 30,
The invention relates to hoisting apparatus and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of winding drum consisting of mating segments adapted to be mounted on a drum shaft, the shaft being provided with a transverse opening through which a hoisting cable is threaded to be wound on the drum, and providing clamping means engaging the first turns of the cable to hold it clamped to the drum and the drum in position on the shaft.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a winding drum formed of mating segments adapted to be mounted on a drum shaft, the shaft being provided with a transverse opening and the segments with recesses in their edges to aline with said opening, the hoisting cable being threaded through said recesses and openings and wound on the drum segments, and providing bars engaging the initial turns 0 the two ends of the cable and means to secure said bars to the drum segments and thereby hold the cable in engagement 'with the segments and the segments in position on the drum shaft.
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a side View, in elevation of the improved drum showing it mounted on a drum shaft,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the drum, the shaft being shown in eleva- 111-011, and
Figures 3 and 4 are transverse sectional views on planes designated by the lines 83, and 4-4, of Figure 1.
In the drawings similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The improved hoisting drum comprises two semi-cylindrical segments 1 and 2 that are adapted to be mounted on a drum shaft 3 and provided with oppositely disposed recesses 4 in their longitudinal edges 5 that aline with an opening 6 arranged transversely of the shaft 3. 7 indicates the hoisting cable that is threaded through the opening 6 and between the notches 4, said cable being 1929. Serial No. 359,252.
pulled through said opening so that the two ends thereof may be wound on the drum seg ments 1 and 2 and in the alined spiral grooves 8 therein that are spirally arranged in oppo site directions from the intermediate portions of said drum segments as clearly shown in Figure 1 so that the two ends of the cable are wound on the drum in the same direction. After the cable 7 is wound on the drum segments as shown and there has been a full load placed on the cable so as to tighten it on the drum segments the cable is clamped to the drum by means of clamp bars 9 engaging the initial turns 10 of the cable and said bars 9 are secured to the drum segments by means of lag screws 11 engaging threaded openings 12 in said segments.
By this construction it will be apparent that an effective means for providing a drum mounted on a drum shaft is secured and at the same time the hoisting cable is utilized for holding the drum on the shaft and the two ends of the cable are used for hoisting purposes, the two ends being simultaneously wound up or unwound from the drum as the case may be.
l/Vhat is claimed is 1- 1. In a winding drum, in combination with a shaft having atransverse opening, drum segments mounted thereon, a cable inserted through said opening and. wound on the drum segments, and clamping members secured to said drum segments and engaging the initial turns of the cable on the drum to hold the segments on the shaft.
2. In a winding drum, in combination with a shaft having a transverse opening therein, drum segments mounted on the shaft and having oppositely disposed recesses in their longitudinal edges arranged in alinement with said opening, a cable inserted through said opening and the alined recesses, said cable being wound on said drum segments, clamp bars engaging the initial turns of the cable on the drum, and means to secure said clamp bars to the drum segments.
3. In a winding drum, in combination with a shaft having a transverse opening therein, drum segments mounted on the shaft, a cable inserted through said opening and between the drum segments and wound on the segments, clamp bars engaging the initial turns of the cable, and screws engaging said bars and drum segments to hold the cable engaged with the segments and the segments in place on the shaft.
In testimony whereof we aifixp our. signa:
tures.
GEORGE P. MONNIER. RUSSEL A. MONNIER.
