Be it known that I, PALLED BERTRAM Know, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Narberth, in the county of Montgo ncry and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wire Cl-amps, whereof the follow ing is a specification, referencebeing had to the'accompanying drawings. I
My invention relates to devices adapted for clamping stranded cables formed of a plurality of spirally laid wires. Ordinarily, such clamps do not include any means for determining the rotary position of the cable with reference to the clamping means. However, with reference to the direction of pressure of the clamp upon the cable is of paramount importance in attaining the maximum holding "effect of the-clamp; because such cables are not trulycircular but polygonalin cross section and, consequently,
are regularlyof different diameters,in different radial directions, and throughout their length; .Therefore,.,my improvement includes means designed and adapted to insure that such a v cable shall be guided to, and held in, the most efficient relation to the clamp,'which is with a minimum diameter ofthe cable presented and maintained between the oppositely compressed members of the clamp. 'As hereinafter described, the specific features of my invention above contemplated are exemplified with. referenceto-a cable formed of seven wires, of which oneis axial and the other six disposed in symmetrical relation encircling the axial wire. However, such a cable-may be employed as the core of a nineteen wire cable by laying twelve additional wires spirally around such a seven wire cable. 1 V

Said bolts extend through registered openings 6 and 7 in the respective-clamps 1 and 2, which openings are preferably similarly squared as indicated in Fig'I'soas to Jpreventrotation of said bolts by engagement with the squared shanks 9 of the'latter; the
arrangement being such that-fit is immaterial which way the bolts areplaced in the clamp.
That is to say, although all of said bolts are indicated with their heads ext erior to the clamp block 1,-they may be placed with their heads exterior to the clamp block 2; but it is more convenient to dispose the central bolt in the opposite direction 'to ;the end bolts, as indicated in dottedliiiesgin Fig. II, to afford more convenient access to the nut 5 thereon. i

although I have shown a clamp which is adapted to thus secure in parallel relation two portions of cable of the same diameter; it is to be understood that the rooves 11 and 18 may be of different sizes so that cables of different diameters may be connected by a single clamp block. Furthermore, although I have shown said grooves 11 and 18 of the same diameter throughout the length of the respective blocksl and 2; it is to be understood that they may be larger at one end than at the other, for instance, to
engage at the. larger end a nineteen wire cable, by clamping the outer congeries thereof; the seven wire core of such a cable being secured in the smaller groove at the other end of the clamp, as shown in'the drawings.
Therefore, I do not desire to limit myself to the precisedetails of construction and arrangement herein set forth, as'it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a wire cable clamp; the combination with a metal block having a groove extending longitudinally therein, corresponding with the exterior diameter of a cable; said groove having flutes in the bottom thereof corresponding in spiral curvature with the pitch and lay of the wires in a cable; said block having a bolt hole extending therethrough; of a second metal bioclr having a bolt hole extending therethrough in registry with said bolt hole in the frst metal block, and having a groove extending longitudinally therein, correspondingwith the eXterior diameter of'a cable, andadapted to register with the roove in said first block and having projections in said second metal block arranged to respectively register with regions of minimum diameter of a cable positioned in said clamp by said flutes; and a bolt arranged to extend through said registered bolt holes and having a nut; whereby said blocks may be compressed toward each other to clamp a cable at regions of minimum diameter.
2. In a clamp for stranded Wire cables having different diametrical dimensions; the combination witha metal block having two cable seats therein,.each including a groove extending from end to end of said block and having flutes thereincorresponding in spiral curvature with the pitch and lay of the wires in the cable; of a second metal block having two cable seats therein, comprising respective longitudinal grooves adapted to register with the grooves in said first block and having cam surfaces with respective crests presented at regions of minimum diameter ofsaid cables; each of said blocks having square openings therematinee and each corresponding with the exterior diameter a cable; said grooves having flutes in the bottom thereof corresponding in spiral curvature with the pitch and lay of the wires in a cable; said block having a series of bolt holes extending therethrough; of a second metal block having bolt holes extending therethrough in registry with the bolt holes in the first metal block, and having two grooves extending longitudinally therein, each corresponding with the elite rior diameter of a cable, and adapted to register with the grooves in said first block and having projections in said second metal block arranged to respectively register with regions of minimum diameter of two cables positioned in said clamp by said flutes; and bolts arranged to extend through said registercd bolt holes and having nut-s; whereby said blocks may be compressed-toward each oticr to clamp two cables at regions of minimum diameter. r
