The invention :relatesin generalto containersand, more particularlyfto vanity cases of the type carried by women and holding toilet articles, such as powder, mirror, etc.
In vanity cases it is desirable that the case p be of suliicient volume to hold the necessary articles andyet appearne'at and small. Furthermore,it'is desirable that the case be of strong, rugged and yet inexpensive construc- According to theinvention, a vanity case is provided having side Walls of polygonal shape and top and bottomwalls having flat annular portions and convex domed center The vanity case may be of the double compacttypeor it may beef avsingle compact type. In thecaseof the double compact type; a third sectionmay be provided containing a mirror. Each top and bottom no cover may be provided witha bezel ring for holding the compact or other toilet 'article in the domed bottom. The covers may be hingedly connected 'at one of their straight sidesfand afnovel catchanay be provided in the form ofa small flat plate hinged to one of thecovers and connected to the other by means of a pinand hole engagement-L -The mirror section may be hinged to one of the bezel rings by placing the knuckleattached 0 to the mirrorsection' against the fiattop of oneoi the bezel rings and passing apintle ring. a a H y a Theinvention also consists in certain lew and original features of constructionand combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed. H
Although the nov l features which are bewire through the kiiuckle and the bezel 1 lieved to be characteristic of this invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself, as to its objects andadvantages, the modetoftits op; eration and the manner of its organization 415 may be better understood'by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings formin'ga part thereof, in which v Figrl is a plan-viewer the case.-
Fig. 3: is a view of the case in open, position. a 1 Fig.4 is a side-elevation in open'position.
Fig. 5 isatrosssectiontaken on the line 55 of Fig; 3. a a i Fig. 6 is a detail on the line 66 of "Fig; 5.
Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a detail taken on the line 8'8 of Fig 3. 1 i
In the following description and (in: the claims parts willtbe identified by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to'be' as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit.
1 Like reference characters denote like parts 5 in the several figures ofthe drawing. a In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, a practical commercial embodiment J of. {the invention is shown", but'as such illustration is primarily for purposesof disclosure it will'be understood that the structure may be modified in various respectswithout departure from the broad spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and: claimed;
1 Referring'nowtowthe drawing, the case com'prisesa top cover ra base cover 2hingedly connectedthereto, and a mirror section 3 hinge'dly connected tothe basecove'r. i f The base cover 2 is made from sheet rhaterialand hasits side walletinthe shape of a polygon, illustrated in this particular em bodiinent as an octagon. The bottom Wall 5 comprises a flatannular portion6' adjacent to thesidewall t from which springs a circular, convex dome portion 7 Secured within the base coveris-a bezel ring 8 having an outer octagonal flange 9 fitting the side wall 4 and an inner cylindrical circular flange 10, these compact comprising a metalconvex backing 15 filled with powder or rouge16.
"The top cover 1 is of substantially the same retain the compact26 inthe"cover:" This compact is the usual commercial oompact with a metal convex backing 27 filled"with cosmetic material 28, such as face powder. h a The two covers 1 and 2 are hinged together by a hinge 31 which is made up'of a central hinge knuckle 32 integral with the wall18 of theftop coverandtwo end knuckles 33 integral with the wall-4 of the base cover; A suitable pintle 34 passes throughthe hinge knuckles 32 a'nd33 and issecured to the end knuckles. The mirror section 3 comprises a body 134 made up of a flat bottom 35, the sheet imetal beingbent and folded back to form an annularflange 36 and then bent at right angles to form a cylindricalfiange 37. 'Disposed within the body 34 is padding38 and the usual mirror 39. 'A bezel ring 40 is held in the flange 37 either by-friction or by bending the flange37 slightly inwardly. Y The eripheral flange 36' is bent slightly upwardly at one part to form a thumb hold 140 (Fig. 3). The mirror section'3 is hingedlyconnected to the bezel ring 8- and is provided with a hinged knuckle 41 which may be secured'to the section by solder or maybe struck out fromthe metalthereof; The flat portion 11 of the bezelringis provided with holes 42 and a pintle wire 43 passes through the hinge knuckle, is bent at right angles andpasses through the two holes 42 andis again bent at right angles, as illustrated in Fig. 6.
To hold the covers in a closed position to prevent accidental opening thereof, a catch 46-is provided having an integral hinge knuckle 47. Through this knuckleis a pintle wire '48 which also passes through holes49 provided in the flat side wall 4. The pintle wire 48 is then bent inwardly on the sidewall, as illustrated in Fig. 8." The catch 46 has a hole- 50 which is adapted to accommodate a pin 51on the side 18 of the top cover to hold tlffidade shulL-" '1 It will be noted that the bezel ring 8 in the base cover provides 'a'recess or seat for'the mirror and that thisb'ezel ring projects above the side walls 40f the 'covera-nd'thus aids in'centering the'top cover on -the'ba's'e' cover in closing." Thehingeknuckle 41 0011 nectedtothe mirror section is small and-the hinge construction is such that it takes-'up a minimum Pamount or space. "Elllthel'l llbre, the bin e of tlfe catch 46 isn'ea't"andsmall. fllhea h lie [Mi-such?- nature as tc be easily bezelrings; l/Vhile certain novel features of the invention have been shown and described and are pointed outin theannexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes inthe forms and details of the'device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art-without departing from the spirit of the'invention.
