, GUN-COVER. No .173, 6.Z5, I latented Feb 1-5,1876.
N. PETERS. PHOTO LTHDGRAPHER WASHINGTON UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
GEORGE W. HAVENS, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ALVA WORDEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUN-CCVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,625, dated February 15, 1876; application filed November 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HAVENS,
of Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and or cover from sheep skin tanned with the wool on, which cover is made up with the wool inside, whereby the gun is inclosed in such a manner that it cannot be marred by chafing, and, after the cover has been used for a short time, it absorbs oil from the gun, which thereby is lubricated sufficiently to prevent rusting of the metal in damp weather.
In the drawing, A represents a gun-cover made of sheep-skin tanned with the wool on, and made up with the Wool, a, on the inside.
The wool acts as an absorbent for the oil with which the gun is lubricated after use and cleaning, as is customary with sportsmen to do, and after a few such oilings the wool will be so saturated as to always keep the gun in perfect order externally, whether the latter is lubricated before putting in the cover or not.
Covers have heretofore been made of cloth, rubber, and leather, and, unless great care is taken, a gun incased in one of them is extremely liable to have the browning chafed off the barrels in transportation, while moisture would condense upon the barrels during damp weather and rustthem.
What 1 claim as my invention is- A gun case or cover made of sheep-skin tanned with the wool on, and made up'with the wool on the inside, substantially as do? scribed.
GEORGE W. HAVENS.
