IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-CLIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,659, dated January 25, 1876; application filed November 9, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PULASKI ROBERTS, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Paper-Clips, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to an improvement in hooks for filing papers, and it is especially adapted to the use of telegraph-ofiices where large numbers of messages are required to be filed as fast as received, and to be finally stored away in the order in which they are received. Theinvention will be understood from the subjoined description and the accompanytion.
In said drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view of the file and the bracket by meansof which it is attached to the wall. Fig. 2 is a rear view, and Fig. 3 a front view, of the filewire detached from the bracket. Fig. 4 is a section of the file-wire, on the line 00 w of Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and 6 are a front and a top view, respectively, of the bracket.
Like letters indicate like parts wherever used in said drawing.
In said drawing, A represents the bracket, secured permanently to the wall A, or to the side of a desk, or to other convenient place. B is the wire file, bent at its lower portion into the hook I), and at its upper portion into the guard-loop I)". The lower portion of the guard-loop, at its outer face, is grooved or notched with the notch e, to afi'ord a restingplace for the hook which springs into said notch. Below this notch the e tremity of the gualdloop is recurved, as shown at c, to facilitate the, removal of the papers from the hook. I make the entire file-wire removable from the bracket, so that the file, upon occasion, may easily be taken down for examination, and finally, when quite filled, taken down and stored away, leaving the bracket still in place, ready for the reception of a fresh wire. This I accomplish, in the present instance, by providing the bracket with two lugs, i i, between which is the slotj, which slot is in all portions, except at the rear upper portion, of
a less width than the diameter of the file-wire, and at the rear upper portion mentioned is of the diameter of the said file-wire. The back limb of the file-wire is then flattened upon the sides of a portion of its length, as shown at 70, Figs. 1 and 2. The file-wire and bracket will now, it is perceived, be ready to be locked together by inserting the flattened portion of the .wire into the slot and sliding the Wire bodily down until the two are locked together. The reverse motion will remove the wire from the bracket.
The fact that the file-wire, including the hook and guard-loop, are all made in one piece greatly simplifies the construction and cheapens the cost of the device, by enabling me to dispense with the usual spring-guard,
that the entire file-wire, including the guard, v
may be removed from the bracket when full, remaining as a file intact, enables me to use any num oer of files with a single bracket or permanent attachment, and thus again, in a difierent manner, cheap'ens the cost of the article.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, the following, viz:
1. The file consisting of the bracket, adapted to be permanently attached to, the wall, and a file-hook, so constructed, essentially as described, that it may be removed from the bracket without detaching the bracket from the wall, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the bracket with the file-hook, having a guard-loop made in one piece and detachable from. the bracket, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the slotted bracket, of the file-wire flattened at the back limb, substantially as specified.
PULASKI ROBERTS.
