Description

T. B. CARPENTER.
STOVE-LID LIFTER. No.17Z,607. 7 Patented Jan.25,1876.
N. PETERS. PHOTOUTHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. D. C- I UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
THACHER B. CARPENTER, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-LID LIFTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,607, dated January 25, 1876; application filed October 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THAoHER B. CARPEN- TER, of the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a cer tain new, useful, and Improved Stove-Cover Lifter and do hereby declare thefollowin g to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specitica tion.
The figure in the drawing is a side elevation of the lifter.
My invention consists, for the most part, in a novel arrangement and construction ofparts, which are hereinafter fully set forth, and their arrangement and construction claimed.
The shank B of the lifter is formed in the shape shown in the drawing, a cross-section of the shank approximating an oval in form, to give it strength and lightness. One end of the shank B terminates in the toe A, formed in proper shape to enter the recess in stovecovers. The other end of the shank unites with the handle D. From the under side of the shank B the prong or hook C projects, having its end flattened, and also the piece 00. The handle D is made round and hollow, and its surface is open, and consists of bars running in the direction of its length and of bars running diagonally between the longitudinal bars, as they are shown in the drawing.
All the above parts are relatively arranged and constructed or cast, as shown in the drawing, in one piece.
The use and advantages of my improved arrangement and construction of the above parts are numerous. While the toe A can be used in the ordinary way and for the ordinary purpose, the hook C can be used to raise pots and kettles by their bails, to turn the dampers in stove-pipes, by means of the slot formed by the hook C, shank B, and piece so. lit can also be used as a hook in connection with the shank B and piece 00, to be placed or put down over the edge of kettles, for the purpose oftipping the same. For any and all of these purposes the hook C is arranged in the best place 011 the shank B, while the handle D, being made open and hollow, does not heat, and is of such shape as to be easily and firmly grasped by the hand when a considerable weight is to be raised by the hook C.
I claim as my inventiou The herein-described stove-cover lifter, consisting of the hook C, piece as, both arranged on the lower edge of the shank B, midway between the toe A and handle D, shank B, too A, and round and hollow handle D, consisting of slightly-curved longitudinal bars terminating in a circular piece connecting the handle with the shank B, and forming one end of the same, and terminating, also, in a perforated disk or ring forming the other end, and of short curved bars running obliquely to the longitudinal bars, and uniting with the same, the said bars arranged to leave open spaces in the shell of the handle, all the said parts constructed in one piece, as shown and described.
TEACHER B. CARPENTER.
