Description
v W.M.STRA TTON.
Bail for Kettles, Boilers, 8L0;
No. 123,648., I Patented Feb. 13, 1372.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAILS FOR KETTLES, BOILERS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,648, dated February 13, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Bail for Kettles, Boilers, &c., invented by WILLIAM M. STRATTON, of West Troy, in the county of Albany and State of New York.
Figure 1 is a side view of a stove-boiler illus- I trating my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, partly in section, through the line a: 00, Fig. 1.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of boilers, kettles, &c., so as to place them more fully under the control of the person handling them enablinghim to handle them with ease and safety; and it consists in the bail so constructed as to become rigidly connected with the body of the kettle or boiler, whenthe weight of said vessel is upon said bail, and to become like an ordinary bail when the weight is taken ofi said bail, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the body of a kettle, boiler, or other vessel, and B is the bail. In the ends of the .bail B are formed slots b extending longitudinally with said bail, to receive the lugs a formed upon the sides of the body A.
a? is a curved flange, formed with a notch or slot formed in its upper or middle part, and with shoulders or stops at its ends. Upon the bail B is formed a shoulder or stud, 11 in such a position that when the stud a is in the upper part of the slot b the shoulder or stud b may move freely along the flange 00', allowing the bail to work upon its pivot in the same manner as an ordinary bail.
When the weight of the vessel A comes upon the bail B, the shoulder or stud b enters the notch or slot in the flange a so as to hold the bail'B rigidly connected with the body, A so long as the weight of said vessel is borne by said bail. This gives the operator full control over the vessel while handling it. As soon as the vessel is set down the bail B unlocks itself automatically by its own. weight, and drops down upon the edge of the vessel in the manner of an ordinary bail.
The form and arrangement of the parts a 00 b b may be varied, as desired, so long as the two main features of my invention are retainedviz., the automatic rigid locking of the bail when the weight of the vessel comes upon it, and theautomatic unlocking of the said bail when the weight of the vessel no longer bears upon it.
Having thus described my invention, claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The bail B, having end slots 12 and shoulders b combined as described with kettlebody A, having lugs a and notched, shouldered, and curved flanges a, as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM M. STRATTON.
