Description
J. L. YOUNG.
IRONING-TABLE. NO.17Z,54.4. Patented Jan. 18, 1876.
WNESSES N. PETERS, FHQTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTQN, D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcn JOHN L. YOUNG, OF FOXBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN lRO NlNG-TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,544, dated January 18, i876; application filed November 6, 1b75.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN L. YOUNG, of Foxburg, Clarion county,Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Ironing-Board, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a top view, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section on the line 0 c, Fig. 1, of my improved ironing-hoard.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
My invention relates to an improved ironing-board, to which the shirts may be readily applied, and then securely retained in stretched state for ironing; and the invention consists of a board with a dovetailed recess at one end, to which the collar-band is attached by a fastening-key, and of a dovetailed stretchingblock, to which the lower part of the bosom is keyed. The block is guided in the recess at the opposite end of the board by a projecting bottom edge, and locked to the ratchet teeth of the recess.
In the drawing, A represents an ironinghoard, of suitable size for shirt-bosoms. The board is provided with lateral recesses at each end, one recess, a, being narrow and dovetailed, while the other recess, 1), at the opposite side is of greater width, for the adjustment of the bosom-stretchin g block B. The stretchingblock B has at its upper side a dovetailed recess. d, while its under side is guided by a screw, 6, in a longitudinal slot, 6, of the board. The under side of block B is made with one or more teeth, f, that enterlateral ratchet-teeth f of recess hot the board. The collar-band of the shirt is fastened by means of a key or strip, 0, in the narrow recess a of the board,
and the lower part of the bosom keyed to the stretching-block in the same manner. The palms of the hands are then placed against the projecting ends of the key in the sliding stretcher, and the fingers over the end of the board, drawing thereby the bosomwas tightly as may be desired on the board. The tooth of the stretching-block locks instantly into the ratchet-teeth of the recess as soon as the key is released. The tension of the shirt retains the stretching-block securely in position, and admits the ready ironing of the bosom. The fastening strips or keys bind the stronger on the shirt the greater the tension of the same.
By releasing the stretching-block the fastening-keys may be readily taken out of the grooves or recesses of the block and board, the stretching and taking off of the shirt being accomplished in a quick and convenient manner, so as to facilitate considerably the ironing of shirt-bosoms.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Anironing-board provided with lateral collar-grooves and fastening-key at one end, and a larger recess with guide-slot and ratchet-teeth at the opposite end, in combination with a sliding stretcherblock, having top groove and fastening-key, and projecting bottom edge or tooth for readily locking the shirt in a stretched position, substantially as specified.
JOHN L. YOUNG. Witnesses:
