This inif'ention relates to hezulwear, and is particularly applicable to caps.
Caps wherein sweat-band is proidded to encircle the entire head are new proviup1 to be popular, and are trennently provided in caps oiE goed quality. Such a sweat-band has not previously been applied to an adjustable cap without the use ol' elastic or similar means for taking up the slack in the sweatband or lfor tensioning' the band to properly position the sweatband when adjustment ot the size ol the cap made.
My invention contemplates the provision ol a simple lull sweatband adapted :tor use in adjustable caps, without the necessity lor the use therewith of other means such as elastic and which comfortably lits the head of the wearer without pleats or wrinkles.
The various objects of my invention will be clear Yfrom the description which lollows and from the drawings, in which,
Fig. l is a bottom plan view olf a cap, showing my improved adjustable sweatband.
Fig. 2 is a side view of a part ot' the outside of an adjustable cap, part of the lower portion of the cap being shown removed to expose the sweatband.
Fig. 3 is a side View ol a part ol the inside of an adjustable cap, showiiu;` particularly my improved sweatband. l
It is desirable in adjustable caps, to have a sweatband ezdiending entirely about the lower edge of the head opening. In that practical embodiment of my invention illustrated l provide such a sweatband by forming said band in two unconnected sections. The :trent section 25 is secured to the vizor 17 in the usual manner, while the rear seetion 2G is also secured to the lower edge oll the crown in the usual manner, each ot said sections extending substantially hall:l way around the edge et the head opening in the cap, and meetingl at the sides olf' the cap.
Near the points where the sweetband sec tions meet, the crown is slit as at 27 i'or a distance su'liicient to allow the lowermost edge ol' the cap to be shortened and lengthened to accommodate heads ditlering in size. @n the front side 33 of the slit 2'?, the lowermost edge et the crown is provided with a tongue or extention 28 j )reiferably oi' the same material. as the cloth oi the cap. To the inside ol.2 said tongue is secured the prolonged end 29 oil the liront sweatbanc seetion 25 as by means oi: suitable stitchingT 39., whereby the tongue is sullieiently stil'lfened to ell'ect its purpose of preventing-g' collapse oi? the cap at the slits, without theV necessity lor the use ol'I additional stillening material. The end 225i projects rearwardly past the rear end olf the vizor and is unsecured thereto.
Art each oi the forward ends 30 ot' the rear sweatband section `2G, a slot as 3l is made, into which the joined tongues 28 and 29 are inserted for free movement therein. rl"he height o'll the slot 3l being` slightly greater than that ot the said tongues, little or no resistance is olii'ered to the adjustin,e` movement when the band sections 25 and 26 are moved together or l'urther apart. The tongues 28 and 29 pass through the slot 3l and are hidden by and behind the sweatband section 2G, but as hereinbetore pointed out, are free to move uneonstrainedly in said slot when the adjustment ofthe cap is ellected. lll/Then the size of the cap is increased, the tongues are pulled further out oi' the slots by the action of the head of the wearer at the time the cap is put on. The same eliect may be obtained merely by givingthe cap a quick snap or jerk without necessarily touching the sweatband at all. `When the size oi' the cap is decreased, the eonstricting pressure on the sweatband caused by the adjusting straps iorces the tongues further into the slots 31, without the aid oit any other means.
It will be seen that I have provided an eliicient ltull sweatband particularly adapted for use in adjustable capsa Various modilications are contemplated, and may be made, ot the preferred speeilie embodiment oi my invention shown and described, since that embodin'icnt is intended to be illustrative only. l do not therefore intend to limit inyselt solely to the construction so illustrated, but intend that modilications including` the equivalents falling` within the range of the appended claims be included herein.
I claim:
l. ln an adjustable cap, having side slits therein, a rear sweatband section ot a single thickness of material secured in place and terminatinp,` at the sides of said cap and having slots therein near the ends thereol, a liront sweatband section oft a single thickness olf material secured to the iront part el said and seamed to the tongue of said front section and having its rear end similarly' free, whereby said tongues are unconstrainedly movable circumferentially in said slot.
2. In an adjustable cap having side slits therein; a two-piece sweatband each of a single thickness of material and completely separable into two lpieces and having ends 1n freely movable interengagement at said side slits, andprojecting tongues on the front part of said cap at said slits sealned to the ends of one piece of said sweatband whereby thelower edge of the front of said cap is movable with the front piece of the sweatband relatively to the rear part of the cap.
3. In an adjustable cap, a finished front sweat-band section of a single thickness of material secured at the front part of the edge of the head opening of said cap, a lin* ished rear sweatband section of a single thickness of material secured at the rear part oil said edge and having a slot therein, means for adjusting the head size of said cap and for restraining said rear section hereby tension is put upon said rear section when the cap is worn, and a rearwardly projecting tongue on said cap and a similar tongue on the end of said front section said tongues being secured together and inserted into the slot of' said rear section and pas-sin g between said rear section and the material ot said cap, whereby said tongues are at all times free to move circiunferentially in said slot on the tensioning or compressing et said sweatband.
