Description

J. L. T'REMPER BUILDING TILE July 9, 1929.
' Filed Sept. 24, 1927 ill) Patented July 9, 1929,
UNITED fifitllES PATENT FFECE.
JAKE L. TEEMPER, OF STREATOR, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO SIREATOR DRAIN TILE 00., A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
BUILDING TILE.
Application filed September 24, 1927. serial No. semis.
This invention relates to improvements in building tile.
One of the ob ects ot my invention is the provision of a tile which is reinforced to prevent breaking. Another :teature of my invention is the provision of a mortar lock tor the tile.
in *arrying out my invention, it provide tour diagonal reinforcing webs at the corners which also term cavities tor mortar locks as will be more particularly pointed out hereinafter. In. most tests made on the crushing strength of hollow tile, the failure was ordinarily caused by sheering oi the outside shells. By the use of my invention, with the reinforcing webs at the corners this sheering is prevented. Heretotore, one objection to the use of face tile has been that after the mortar dries and shrinks it falls out and. leaves openings between the ends of the tiles. By the use of my invention, small cavities are formed at the ends 01? the tile by the diagonal reinforcing ribs to form cells, and when the tile are laid some oil the mortar is forced into these cells to act as a key and prevent the inortar from dropping out between the ends of the tile.
Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.
In that term of device embodying the teatures of my invention, Figure 1 is a view in perspective and Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation.
The tile has the usual parallel upper and lower side walls 11 and 12 and the parallel end walls 13 and 14 to form a rectangular tile. Between the side walls 11 and 12 are provided the brace webs 15 and 16. As thus far described, the tile is of well-known construction in more or less common use. The brace webs 15 and. 16 divide the space between the end walls 13 and I l substantially into equal thirds.
At each corner of the tile there provided a diagonal reinforcing web 17 extending the entire length of the tile. These diagonal relnl'orcing webs 17 preferably extend from a line substantially at the center of the end wall to a point on the side wall close to the 1unction ot' the nearest brace web 15 or 16.
The diagonal reinforcing webs 17, 17 strengthen the tile and prevent sheering, crusl'iing or breaking of the tile and especially guard against failure of the tile t'roin crushing torces. It will be noted that the reinforcing webs 17 also leave a small triangular cell 18 at each corner ot the tile. l/Vhen the tile are laid, some of the mortar is forced into these cells to act as a key and prevent the mortar from dropping out between the ends of the tile.
While 1 have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifier tions. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the in.- vention disclosed in the appended claim, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty in my invention as broadly possible in view of the prior art.
What I claim is new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: y
A building tile of rectangular form having parallel upper and lower walls, sell-sustaining vertical end walls parallel to each other and at right angles to said uppe. and lower walls, two brace webs between the said upper and lower walls dividing the space between the said end walls substantially into equal thirds, and diagonal reinforcing webs at the corners, said reinforcing webs extending from substantially the centers oil: the vertical walls to points close to the junction of the side walls with the brace webs and providing relatively small cells to serve as mortar locks.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of September, 1927.
JAKE L. TREMPER.
