1 Claim. (Cl. 72-33 This invention relates to building construction, and in particular building walls wherein wood panels and concrete studding are formed and interlocked with wood keys wherein with surfaces of the panels and studs covered with waterproofing material stucco and plaster may be directly applied to the wall to provide strong, and at the same time, economical waterproofed and insulated load bearing walls.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means for utilizing waste material in wall construction.
Various types of combination walls have been designed and used in building construction, however, it has been found difiicult to combine wood and concrete to provide a wall having sufiicient strength to be used as a load bearing wall and wherein grooves in the wood provide forms for reinforcing elements of the concrete or other surfacing material. vention contemplates spaced panels of longitudinally positioned wood blocks or beams, such as two by fours or two by sixes with longitudinally disposed grooves in horizontally disposed faces of the blocks and with keys having transversely disposed slots therein extended through some of the grooves and into spaces between the panels of blocks; and wherein concrete studs are positioned in the spaces between the ends of the panels, the side surfaces of which are flush with the side surfaces of the wood panels; and wherein with the side surfaces of the wool panels and studs covered with waterproofing material stucco is applied to the outer surfaces of the panels and studs and plaster to the inner surfaces, the stucco and plaster having ribs positioned in the grooves at the corners of the blocks.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming and assembling wood beams or blocks having slots in upper and lower surfaces thereof in combination with concrete studs and with keys for alining the blocks to form panels between the studs with the keys, which are provided with transversely disposed slots, extending into the studs.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for forming a concrete wall with permanently installed blocks filling the interior of the wall in which stucco at the sides is provided with reinforcing elements and in which vertically disposed studs are provided at intervals throughout the length of the wall.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form for forming a concrete wall in which the forms remain permanently in the wall in which the wall is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies wood blocks having longitudinally disposed grooves in upper and lower surfaces with keys extended through the meeting surfaces of the blocks and with grooves also provided in meeting surfaces and positioned at the edges of the blocks; the blocks being spaced with concrete studs and the side surfaces of the blocks being covered with waterproofing material and stucco and plaster.

Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the joint between the wood blocks or beams of two sections of a wall with parts broken away showing a portion ofa concrete stud filling the area around keys extended from thee'nds of the blocks with the concrete, and portions of ends of the blocks shown in section.
Referring now to the drawingwherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved wall construction of this invention includes wood blocks or beams 10 having V-shaped grooves 11 and 12 in one edge and 13 and 14 in the opposite edge and also having enlarged key retaining grooves 15 and 16 positioned in opposite surfaces and through which keys 17 having transversely disposed slots 18 and 19 therein are positioned.
As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 the keys 17 extend to points 23 and 24 spaced from end surfaces 25 and 26 of aligned stacks of blocks.
The keys extend longitudinally through the grooves of the blocks and the ends extend from both ends of the block, as shown in Fig. 1 wherein with an area between ends of panels of the blocks filled with concrete to form studs 20, the concrete extending through the notches 1S and 19 locks the panels of the wall to the studs.
The blocks may be formed of waste material by running the material through a matcher with the knives set for forming grooves as shown and described.
In constructing a wall stacks of blocks are positioned in superimposed relation with the side surfaces aligned and with the blocks positioned as shown in Fig. 1 forms are positioned on both sides of the blocks and as concrete is supplied to the forms the studs 20 are formed and the surfaces are flush with side surfaces of the panels of blocks.
The side surfaces of the panels and studs are covered with waterproofing material and stucco or the like is directly applied over the waterproofing material on the outer surfaces of the panels and studs.
By the same means plaster is applied over the waterproofing material on the inner surface of the Wall, and the stucco and plaster are locked to the wall by beads forming keys 21 that are formed in the grooves 13 and 14 of the blocks.
Although the blocks are described as being made of wood it will be understood that they may be made of other suitable material and the side surfaces of the blocks may be covered with waterproofing or with other suitable material.
It will also be understood that the keys extending through the grooves of the blocks may extend the full length of a wall making it possible to build a solid wall and may also extend into the corners forming laminated corners and, at the same time, leaving spaces at regular intervals, such as every four feet for studs or reinforce ment. The blocks and keys may also be assembled in other patterns and designs.
It will also be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
In a building wall construction, a plurality of superimposed beams, said beams being arranged in separate groups which are spaced from each other; said beams having V-shaped slots in each edge thereof, said beams also having enlarged V-shaped key retaining grooves positioned in surfaces thereof; the slots in the adjacent beams being arranged in opposed aligned relation with respect to each other and coacting to define spaces; the grooves in contiguous blocks being arranged in facing aligned relation with respect to each other so as to define chambers which are rectangular in cross section, said chambers being spaced inwardly from the sides of said beams and communicating with said slots; said slots and grooves being arranged so that an imaginary plane extending between meeting faces of the beams will bisect the spaces and chambers; a plurality of keys arranged in staggered formation with respect to each other, said keys being rectangular in cross section and having transversely disposed V-shaped slots spaced inwardly from the ends thereof, said keys being positioned in said grooves, the ends of the keys extended from ends of the beams in alternate fashion, and concrete studs positioned between ends of the beams and having the keys embedded therein, the slots in the keys being arranged in offset staggered relation with respect to each other.
