Description
June 11, 1929. I A. c. BUNKER LOUVER Filed July 8, 1927 v WITNESSES Patented June 11, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUVER.
Application filed July 8, 1927. Serial No. 204,202.
This invention relates, generally, to the class of structures known as louver-s, these being a. plurality of inclined slats, fixed and spaced apart in a frame, for the purpose of permitting the free passage or air between them, while excluding that of rain or snow.
The invention, while of general utility in louvers, is more particularly designed for ap plication in those applied in electric locomotives for the admission of air to the traction motor blowers.
The object of the invention is to effect a simplification. of a louver, whereby a reduction of weight, space, and cost, will be attained, and changes in the position of the movable shutters which are effected in present practice will be rendered unnecessary.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a partial side View, in elevation, of an electric locomotive, illustrating an application of the invention; and, Fig. 2, an isometric vertical section, on an enlarged scale, through the louver shown in Fig. 1.
In the practice of the invention, referring descriptively to the specific embodiment thereof which is herein exemplified as ap plied on an electric locomotive, A, the improved louver thereof comprises a plurality of horizontal slats or plates of light plate metal, 1, which are fixed in vertical supports, 2, and spaced apart to afford passes or avenues for the passage of air between them, and a plurality of movable shutters, 3
adapted to close the inner ends of said passes. The slats, 1, are bent into substantially inverted V section, so as to cause two changes of direction of the incoming air, and the shutters, 8, are flat plates, secured to shafts, 3, which are journalledin the supports, 2.
In order to enable the shutters to be moved into and out of position to close the passes between the slats, as may, from time to time, be desired, short shafts, 3 are connected to 4 the shafts, 3 said shafts having crank arms, 3", on their outer ends, which are coupled by pins, 4, to a pair of connecting links, 4:, and an operating handle, 49.
As shown in Fig. 2, the shutters are in the 5 open position. in which itwill be seen that they cause an additional change of direction of the incoming air, and a consequent increase of the length of the passes between the slats, and of resistance to the entrance of rain or 5 snow, the appliance being thus rendered more compact and effective, without. increased weight and cost.
The invention herein claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
In a louver, the combination of a support a plurality of inverted, open, rigid, trough shaped slats, secured to the support in spaced relation, to present intermediate upwardly and downwardly inclined passes for incoming air; and a plurality of movable shutters, mounted in the support, and adapted, when open, to provide intermediate air passes, additional to those interposed between the slats.
ARTHUR C. BUNKER.
