BED BOTTOM.
Application led May 11,
My invention relates to bed bottoms, and is an improvement over that shown in my Patent No. 1,427,020 granted August 22, 1922.
It is an object of the invention to provide a stronger and more durable device of this character, suitable for use with an iron bedstead, and one in which the bed bottom along the middle may be adjusted to level up the mattress and prevent the same from sagging, but having a certain amount of resiliency; all as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating one application of my invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical section on a line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical section taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 2.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates the head and 11 the foot of an ordinary iron bedstead, connected by angle iron side bars 12. In the usual construction slats o1' patent springs are placed on the horizontal flanges 13 of the side bars, such slats frequently sagging and the patent springs being less comfortable than the old type of springs used with the slats. As described in my patent above mentioned, instead of using slats which extend entirely across the bed, I have severed the slats along the median line of the bed, and instead of using wood I have substituted metal bars, a pair of such transverse bars 14: and 15 taking the place of al single slat, Said transverse bars 14 and 15 are secured at their outer ends to the side bars 12 by means of rivets or bolts 16, and have their inner ends secured by rivets or bolts 17 to a pair of oppositely disposed parallel longitudinal hanger bars 18, such bars being mounted back to back, and with their upper horizontal flanges extending outwardly over the transverse bars 14 and 15. The longitudinal supporting bars 18 are connected by a plurality of hinge members each comprising sections 19 and 20 longitudinally slotted at 21 to permit longitudinal adjustment of the respec- 1928. Serial' No. 276,964.
tive hinge sections, bolts o r other fasteningv means 22 being employed for securing the sections firmly together in xed adjusted relation. On the under side of each of said longitudinal hanger bars 18 is pivotally supported a depending arm 23 which co-operates with an opposed depending arm' 24 on the adjacent bar, said depending arms being cut away at one side so that when the depending bars are swung to overlapping relation they form a slot between them, such depending arms being limited in their overlapping relation by their upper ends which engage the horizontal portions of the longitudinal bars 18. A helical spring is inserted around the members 23 and 24 against which rests a transverse rod 26, which has its extremities secured to the rivets or bolts 16 for supporting the central part of the bed bottom in the desired position, a turn buckle 27 being also provided by means of which the proper adjustment can be had and the middle 'portion of the bed held at the proper height.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departingfrom the spirit of the invention, and I, therefore, do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but only as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A bed bottom comprising two juxtaposed sections each comprising a frame having spaced transverse bars extending thereacross, adjustable hingesl connecting the said sections, overlapping arms depending from said bottom under one of said hinges the said arms being pivoted to each of'said sections and one of said arms having a cut-out portion in its extremity to form a slot `between the arms, a. spring surrounding said arms, and an adjustable tensioning element secured to opposite sides of said bottom and kextending under said spring through said slot for adjusting the height of the middle of said bed bottom, substantially as set forth.
2. A bed bottom comprising two juxtaposed sections comprising a frame having transverse bars extending thereacross, ad-
justable hinges connecting Said sections, an of the middle of seid bed bottom, Substanafm depending from each section and ove'- telly as set forth. lapping an arm of the othel` section, a spring In witness Whe'eot', I have hereunto set 10 about said allns, and an adjustable tension my hand et Andersonvlle, Georgia, this 8th 5 ing element secured to opposite sides of Said day o1" May, A.
