Description
M. WINSTEIN. MATTRESS GUARD. APPLFCATIOI map 00125. 1919.
Patented July 13, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX WINSTEIN, 0F MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
MATTRESS-GUARD.
Application filed October 25, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX Wiivs'rnm, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at 321 Laval avenue, in the city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Mattress-Guard, oi which the following is the specification.
The invention relates to mattress guards as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
,The invention consists essentially of the novel means employed for holding a mattress in its place on the sprin The objects of the invention are to avoid the displacement of mattresses after they have been put on' the springs; to insure the ready adjustment of the guards or basket sides to accommodate the different thicknesses of? mattresses; to effectually maintain the shape of the mattress and thereby furnish comfort and repose; and generally to provide a cheap, durable and ellicient guard. member for the purposes aforesaid.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a spring bed, showing the mattress guards.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the spring bed, showing one guard member.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation showing the guard member adjusted for a thick mattress.
l ig. 4 is an end elevation, showing the guard member adjusted for a comparatively thin mattress.
Fig. 5 is a perspective detail showing an enlarged fragmentary view of one corner portion of the spring bed and guard.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, the ends 1 of the frame are rigidly secured to the sides 2 and extend thei'eliey oncl.
The spring 3 is secured to the ends 1 in the most approved manner above the sides 2 and therebeyond. The ends 1 are slotted at 4: and the adjustable links 5are slidably ar ranged in the slots 4:. The upper ends of the links 5 are pivotally secured to the springs 6 at the hook shaped ends 7 and the lower ends of the links 5 are joined by the rod 8, which is here shown as having in the center a turnbuckle section 9, though this is not by any means essential, still it may facilitate the adjustment of the springs 6 after they have been positioned for the particular style of mattress.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13,192o.
Serial No. 333,253.
In the operation of this invention, the springs are held at a tension by the connectmg rods below, consequently the links are very tightly held to one end of the slots 4, which will maintain them at a predetermined height above the spring bed at each side. This forms what is usually termed in the t 'ade a basket for the mattress, though they are actually guard rails in spring form to hold the mattress from displacement The height ofthe guard members are adjusted by undoing the rod below from one of the links or in the case of a turnbuckle loosening the rod by means of said turnbuckle and thereby making it a simple matter to adjust the guard member to suit the thickness oi the mattress to be used on the spring bed, or the adjustment may be made by simply stretching the sprin s a little and moving the links as desired.
Various changes may be made in the details of the construction without departing from the spirit oi the invention, and so long as these changes are within the scope oi the claims for novelty following, the protection accorded shall not be invalidated.
'VVhat I claim is 1. In mattress guards, a pair of links adjustably fulcrumed in opposing members of a frame and joined at one end by a spring and at the other by a connecting rod.
2. In mattress guards, the combination with a frame supporting a resilient couch member, of link members vertically slidable in said frame, a spring member joining the upper end of said links and a rod member joining the lower ends of said links.
3. In mattress guards, the combination with a frame supporting a resilient couch member, of spring guard rails supported in vertically adjustable end members and held in tension from the lower ends of the end members.
4:. In mattress guards, the combination with a frame having slots in the end pieces and spring bed supported thereby, of links slidably adjustable in said slots, helical springs hooked to the upper ends of said links and rods hooked to the lower ends and having an adjustable screw section.
, Signed at the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, this 10th day of October, 1919.
MAX WINSTEIN.
