UNION SUIT FOR MEN.
Application filed October 27, 1923. Serial No. 671,139.
My invention relates to union suits for men and has for its object primarily to provide a union suit of textile fabric or other sui table ma terial which is provided with requisite openings for necessary use and yet which has no fastening devices permanently attached to the garment. The garment as fabricated will provide a short straight front with a suitable opening in the center line thereof, but which without fastenings'is normally closed and with another suitable opening at the rear of the garment also kept closed without fasten-, ing. The waist portion of the garment is provided with shoulder straps permanently attached to the garment, these straps being of excess length topermit the garment being drawn up over the hips of the wearer between. the straps. A multiplicity of button-holes are provided in the straps through which a stud may be insertedin such adjusted positlon that the garment 1s correctly held onthe wearer. o
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof, and are particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings illustrated an application of my invention in one form,
Fig. 1 shows the garment in position on the wearer viewed from the front with the limbs in extreme position. Y viewed from the back. Figs. 3 and 4 are front and rear views of the upper part of the garment showing the manner of securing elongated strips in adjusted position. Fig. 5
is a pattern view of the straps. Figs. 6 and 7 are symmetrically positioned views of the two front members and the flap inserts adapted to be connected therewith. Fig. 8 illustrates the two rear members symmetrically positioned but in unassembled relation. is a pattern view of the back of the waist portion. Fig. 10 shows this waist portion connected with the two back members.
The novel features of my improved garment can best be pointed out by defining the manner of constructing the garment as exemplified in the pattern members of sheet two of the drawings, and which correctly represent the manner of fabricating the garment. The front of the garment is comprised of two pieces 11 and 12 each formed with a lower V- shaped extension 13 and 14 respectively. The
separate extension piece indicated at 15 is sewed along its edge 16 to the edge 17 of extenslon 13. S1m1larly, a separate extension Fig. 2 is a similar view Fig. 9
piece 18 issewed along its edge 19 to the edge 20 of extension 14 on member 12. With the parts thus attached the member 15 has a lower part of its edge 21 attached to the member 12 along the dotted line 22 to the point indicated by numeral 23. Similarly, the part 18 attached to the front member 12 is secured along its straight edge 24 to member 11 on the dotted line 25 to the point indicated by numeral 26, and edge 27 of part 11 is sewed to edge 28 of part 12 to the point marked 29 on 7.
both ,parts. This provides a complete front member which is united with the back member as hereinafter described.
The backcomprises two symmetrical portions 30 and 31 and a waist portion 32. The back portions are laid over one another to bring'dotted lines 33 and 35 respectively one above the other, or, otherwise stated, to bring the notches 36 and 37-at the top and 38 39 at the bottom sothat they can coincide in position. The edge 40 of waist portion 32 is then sewed to thecombined upper edge 41 of the complete back, the waist portion being gathered at 42 and 43 between sets of notches 44 and 45 to give some needed fullness at that point. The members 30 and 31 are further united where they overlap at the bottom, as indicated at 46. The back is now ready to be united to the front and this is done in two ways. Edges 47'and 48 of the front members are sewed respectively to edges 49 and 50 of the back member between points 51 and 52 on each edge. v The front member portions out out on a curved line at 53 and 54, which and.
11 and 12 are in conjunction with similar curves at 55 and 56 of the back member yoke provide the armholes of the garment. The members 11 and 12 are provided adjacent these arm-hole portions with tabs 57 and 58 each having a single button-hole, indicated at 59, 60, and to these tabs and below the button-hole is sewed one end of straps 61 62, the other end of said straps being sewed to the respective strap members 63, 64 of the back yoke 32. These straps may be provided with a number of button-holes as indicated at 65, and Within these button-holes is a removable two-headed stud 66 which is adapted to be adjustably positioned in any of the button-holes 65 and when so positioned to button into the but ton-holes'59, 60 of the tabs 57, 58.
The garment so fabricated is of large enough internal diameter to admit of the same being drawn up over the hips of the wearer, the extensible straps 61, 62 permittingthis, after which, with the studs 66 in proper adjusted position in one of the of holes 65, the tabs 57, 58 are buttoned thereon through the button- holes 59, 60 on said tabs and the garment is suspended upon the wearer in a reasonably close fitting; and effective position without any longitudinal button or snap closures anywhere on the garment.
As indicated at 70 and 71 on Fig. 1, the connection of the pieces 15 and 18 with the extensions 13 and 14 of front member portions 11 and 12 is such as to provide a lateral opening in the garment along the center line thereof and at points above the crotch, and this feature is essential in the production of a garment wherein there are no longitudinal openings or closures.
I claim:
1. A union nndergarment without fastening devices for closures, con'iprising body and leg portions provided with a self-closing rear opening and provided with a self-closing front opening, and elongated shoulder straps adjustable to the form of the wearer whereby said openings are held closed.
2. A union undergarment without fastening devices for closures, comprising body and leg portions provided with 'a self-closing rear opening and provided with a self-closing front opening, shoulder straps oi excessive length secured to the front and rear of the body portion, and means for removably connesting said shoulder straps to the body portion at different points in their length to adjust them to the form of the wearer while permitting the garment to be drawn on over the wearers hips.
3. A union nndergarment without fastening devices for closures, comprising body and leg portions provided with a self-closing rear opening and provided with a self-closing front opening, shoulder straps of excessive length secured to the body portion, and means for removably connecting said shoulder straps to the body portion at di'lferent points in their length to adjust them to the form of the wearer while permitting the garment to be drawn on over the wearers hips. 4. A union undergarment comprising body and leg portions, shoulder straps of excessive length attached at their respective ends to the front and rear of the body portion, said straps being provided with a plurality of button-holes along their length and the body portion adjacent one of the respective ends of the straps being provided with button-holes, and fastening devices adapted to cooperate with the last mentioned buttonholes and selected button-holes of the straps for supporting the garnmnt in an adjusted position on the wearer.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix my signature.
MARY D. NEILSON.
