Description
y 1938. D. WATINSKY I 1 BATHING SUIT Filed Afi .19, 1957- INVENTOR David Hafznsky.
V M i ATTORNEYS Patented May 3, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC 6 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in bathing suits and has for a principal object the provision of a bathing suit of the dressmaker type comprised of a bodice and skirt preferably in onepiece, an undershirt forming a lining for said bodice, and a pair of panties detachably secured to said undershirt.
Another object of the invention is the provision, in a bathing suit of the dressmaker type having an undershirt forming a lining for the bodice of the dress, of a reinforcing member secured to said undershirt portion to form therewith a brassire, said member extending downwardly and being faced with one row of zipper fasteners, and the provision of a pair of panties provided with a like row of zipper fasteners adapted to be placed in cooperative relation with or removed from cooperative relation with said first row of fasteners thereby eliminating the necessity of providing other openings in the suit for the purpose of ingress or egress. The suit and the panties are zipped apart and put on separately after which they may again be zipped together.
A further object of the invention is the provision, in bathing suits of the character described, of panties made up, in part, of rubber (such as lastex), and due to the perishable nature of such materials as compared to the materials in the remainder of the suit, such panties may readily be replaced several times before the suit proper is discarded.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a brassiere and of panties adapted to be placed in quickly detachable cooperative relation with each other on a wearers body, the junction member being permanently secured to said brassire and detachably secured to said panties.
Other objects will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
Referring now to the drawing- Figure 1 is a front view of the new and improved bathing suit;
Figure 2 is a back view of the suit shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a front view of the suit shown in Figure 1 with a portion of the front broken away to show the panties detached; and
50 Figure 4 is a vertical medial section of the bathing suit shown in Figure 1.
In describing the new and improved bathing suit, the main or outer garment will be termed a dress; the inner garment forming a lining for the bodice of the dress will be termed an undershirt; and the detachable drawers portion of I the suit will be termed pants.
Referring to the drawing, the dress generally designated by the numeral l0 consists of a bodice portion II and a skirt portion l2. Between the. arm-holes l3 and [4, respectively, and the neckopening- Hi, the narrowest portions I6 and N form in effect shoulder straps. The neck-opening in the back may be cut low, if desired, at [8 so that a portion of the wearers back may be exposed. Suitable belt strings l9 and 20 are secured to the dress on opposite sides thereof and may be tied in a bow at the rear, as indicated in dotted lines at 2|. Within the bodice ll an undershirt 22 is provided. This undershirt is provided with arm and neck openings matching the arm-holes i 3 and l4 of the suit and the neck-openings l5 and I8., The undershirt 22 ispreferably stitched to the bodice along the outlines of the arm and neck openings and preferably along the waist-line 23 across the back of the bodice.
The front portion of the shirt has secured thereto. by stitching, indicated at 24, a reinforcing member 25. The reinforcing member 25 may be of any desired shape, but in the preferred embodiment of the invention it is pentagonal form. In the preferred embodiment one apex of the pentagon joins the front neck opening l5 at the point indicated by the numeral 26. This reinforcing member strengthens the undershirt in front and forms in elfect a brassiere.
The lower edge of the reinforcing member 25, as may be seen in Figure 3, has secured thereto a row 21 of fasteners of the zipper type, the function of which will presently be described.
The back of the suit may be provided with a placket 28 extending from the opening 18 downwardly to a point below the waist, and suitable buttons 29 or other fastening devices may be provided for opening and closing the placket 28.
The panties 30 may be made of any suitable material; however, in the preferred embodiment of the invention the panties are made of materials which include rubber or the like, a typical example of which is known on the market as Lastex.
It has also been found preferable in using such materials for panties to have the grain or the stretch of the material extend laterally so that panties of a given length may fit a plurality of sizes of wearers. The waist 3| of the panties may be finished off with a suitable hem or binder which may also be stretchable.
The waist 3| may also have secured thereto in front, a row 32 of fasteners similar to the row 21 and adapted to be placed in cooperative relation with the fasteners in the row 21. The actuator member 33 of the fastener preferably remains on the row 32.
In placing the fastener members in cooperative relation with each other, a pilot member 34 at one end of the row 21 is inserted into an opening in the member 33 provided for the purpose, thereby facilitating the operation of securing the panties to the suit.
In some models the placket 28 may be omitted and in place thereof suitable trimmings may be provided, in which case the suit may be put on and taken off over the wearers head, the panties having previously been detached.
In Figure 4, the brassiere portion of the suit is shown in cooperative relation with the panties 30, the panties being detachably secured to the reinforcing member 25, and the member 25 being permanently secured. by stitching, to the brassiere portion of the suit. This arrangement is not only applicable to bathing suits, but may be used for ordinary Wear and particularly for dance sets in which case the shoulder straps l6 and I! would be substantially narrowed and the sides of the brassiere would also be substantially narrowed and arranged to encircle the body.
Although a preferred embodiment of the invention is herein shown and described, it is obvious that many other embodiments of the invention may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as. set forth in the annexed claims. a
