JOHN D. HYBERGER, AND FRANK HYBERGER, OF TIMBER` RIDGE, TENN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,269, dated November 23, 1875 application led October 1, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN D. HYBERGER and FRANK HYBERGER, of Timber Ridge, in the county ot' Greene and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Fences 5 and We do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature ot' our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a fence, as Will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our felice. Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sections of the same. Fig. 4 is a horizontal lsection through the line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 shows a modification of the fence-post.
The fenceposts consist of a triangular piece, A, having one right angle, and a bar, B, secured along its longest inclined side, and extending a suitable distance beyond the upper end of the same. O O are horizontal boards, forming thc panel, which are fastened near their ends to the upright sides of the posts in such a way as to leave one post on each side of the panel. On the opposite side of the panel from the post is secured an upright cleat or bar, D. by the same nails or screws that fasten the vboards to the post. At one end of the panel the boards O project a short distance beyond the post, and the ends of the top and bottom boards are halved, as shown in Fig. 4.
The top and bottom boards at the other end of the panel also project beyond the post, and are halved on opposite sides, so that when two panels are put together they will lap, and thus hold each other in proper place. The bars B of the posts extend in opposite directions above the fence-panel, and in the crotch thus made are placed suitable riders E E to weight the fence and hold it steady.
Any panel may be used as a gate by simply removing the riders, and lifting' the panel up until the locks a are disengaged, when the panel may be swung to either side, as may be desired.
Instead of making the post A solid it may be -made in skeleton form, which, for some purposes, may be more advantageous.
The fence may be made stationary by driving stakes, at or through the outer corners of the posts.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' In combination with the post A, the ex; tended bars B of the panel-boards G,'cut to form lap-joints a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we afx our signatures in presence of two witnesses. f
JOHN D. HYBERGER.
FRANK HYBERGER.
