LINCRUSTA AND METHOD 0F MAKING THE SAME.
Application tiled April- 21, A1928. Serial No. 271,779.`
This invention relates to lincrusta and method of making the same.
An object ot the invention is to provide a material or lincrusta paper, as it is com' monly known in the art, which has a twotone elect, and the invention includes the provision ot a backing sheet With a composition thereon, said composition thinner at some portions than at other portions whereby the color of the backing sheet is seen through a tilm of the material to give a two-tone eliect or color differing from the color of the composition on the paper.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a roller in Which a design is etched or sunken, and I subject to this roller a backing sheet having a colored surface. on which the plastic composition is positioned so that, when the pressure of the roll is applied to the faceof the sheet of paper having the composition thereon, the composition will be shaped or embossed to 'form a design, and between the configurations of the design 'a thin film of material will cover the sheet so that a color effect Will be had contrasting with the color of the composition.
My invention therefore consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which Will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a plan view of a section of my improved article of manufacture, known on the market as lincrusta, having a two-tone effect;
Figure 2 is an exaggerated view in section through the material before the design is `formed in the composition on the paper;
Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 2 showing the completed article of manufacture with a design formed thereon and a thin film over the backing sheet Which vgives a two-tone effect;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary View in longitudinal section illustrating the carrying out of my method.
My improved article of manufacture, commonly known on the market as lincrusta, includes a backing sheet 1 and a covering material 2.
The backing sheet 1 is preferably of paper and has on one face at least a color. On this colored face of the backing sheet 1 the covering material 2 is located when in plastic condition and then subjected to the pressure action of a roll 3 having a design etched or otherwise sunken in the face of the roll 8, as shown at 4, so that when the material has passed under this roll 3 the design will be impressed in the composition, leaving portions of the composition relatively thick and other portions relatively thin, as indicated at 5 and 6, respectively, in Figure 3. In other words, between the raised or thicker portion of the composition 2 a thin ihn 6 will he disposed over thev backing sheet l and the color of the face of the backing sheet l will show through the thin ihn ot material giving a two-tone cllect to the design.
In the manufacture of the article, a paper having one surface of one color and the other surface of another color is preferably employed, which is for convenient manufacturing of different tones of the article, but of course I do not limit myself to the particular manner of coloring the backing sheet nor to any particular color but desire to cover broadly an article of material of this character on which the composition thereon forms a design of two-tone effect by reason of the fact that the composition on the paper is thicker at some .portions than at other portions so that at the thinner portions the color of the backing sheet gives a color to the fihnof material thereon.
I claim:
l. The herein described method of making lincrusta, including the provision of a backing sheethaving a colored surface. depositing a thickness of plastic composition on said backing sheet, thon subjecting said composition to a die roll whereby portions of the composition are relativelv thick and other portions relatvelythin, said latter y .v sheet having a colored surface, 'a'nd a/composition on the colored surface of the backing sheet having a depressed design therein thinner than the rest of the coating whereb the colored backing sheet shows throng the depressed portion of the coating and a two-tone eect is had.
MILTON K. HUPPUCH.
