The invention relates to molding machines of the type designed for use in the forming of multiple or stack molds, and it is the object of the invention to secure exact registration of the patterns, which respectively form the cope and drag mold cavities. To this end the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing the machine is illustrated in sectional front elevation.
In general construction the molding machine comprises a base A, preferably chambered to form a container for the oil or other operating fluid and provided with the upright columns B and B with the swingingcross head C at the upper ends thereof. D is the cylinder arranged centrally of the face, Ev the piston therein, and F the ramming head at the upper end of said piston. This ramming head supports the flask frame G, the flask H mounted thereon and the sand frame H. There is also provided a vibrator frame J, a stool plate K and movable abutments L for engaging said stool plate during the descent of the plunger to separate the flask from the pattern. The cross head C carries a stationary ramming head M, which in turn carries the drag pattern N. 3
In the operation of the machine any slight play or clearance in the construction of the parts may permit a lateral movement of the ram sufficient to destroy the exact registration of the cope and drag patterns with each other. It is not feasible to remove all such play in the construction of the main parts of the machine, and, as a consequence, the work performed thereon is sometimes defective. I have, however, provided additional means for eliminating such lost motion, which is constructed as follows:
The cross head C is provided on its lower side with depending lugs O and in these are accurately secured depending guide pins P. The vibrator frame J is provided with outwardly extending portions R which are apertured for engagement with the pins P inadvance of the imprinting of the pattern in the mold. The guides thus formed will hold the lower pattern in registration with the upper pattern and even if there is play in the piston and cylinder which permits of a slight relative lateral movement, this will not interfere with the accuracy of the registration of the two patterns.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a molding machine, the combination with a stationary frame, of a reciprocatory ram, complementary cope and drag patterns respectively mounted on said frame and ram, a vibrator frame connected with the pattern on the ram, outwardly projecting extensions of said frame on opposite sides thereof, and guides on said stationary frame for engaging said outward extensions in advance of the completion of movement of the ram to hold said vibrator frame and the pattern carried thereby in accurate registration with the complementary pattern.
2. In a molding machine, the combination with a stationary frame, of a reciprocatory ramming head and means on said head for mounting of a flask thereon, a vibrator frame on said head independent of said flask, a
1 pattern carried by said vibrator frame, a complementary opposed pattern upon said stationary frame, parallel guide pins depending from said stationary frame on opposite sides of the pattern thereon, and outward projections on said vibrator frame for engagement of said guide pins in advance of the completion of movement of said ram to hold said frame and the pattern carried thereby in accurate registration with the complementary pattern.
8. In a molding machine, the combination with a frame, a pattern head mounted thereon, a reciprocatory ram, a complementary pattern carried thereby, a vibrator frame to which said complementary pattern is secured, said vibrator frame provided with outwardly extending apertured portions, and guide pins depending from said first mentioned frame adapted to engage said apertured portions prior to the completion of movement of said ram to hold said complementary pattern in accurate registration with said first-mentioned pattern.
I. In a molding machine, the combination with a stationary frame, a reciprocatory ram, complementary cope and drag patterns respectively carried by said frame and ram, and a flask, of a vibrator frame to which said pattern on the ram is secured, and guiding means independent of said flask on said stationary frame for engaging said vibrator frame in advance of the completion of movement of said ram to hold the pattern connected therewith in accurate registration with the com- 10 plementary pattern. 7
