Application filed March a1, 1926, Serial No. 98,775 Bienewed'Noveinber 2, 1928 i This invention relates to curtain holding devices, and more particularly to a device which is adapted to be secured to the inner side of a window casement adjacent the window jamb, and provided with a spring tensioned instantly adjustable arm for holding the lower portion of window curtains and the like, away from the window jamb, and to one side of the window casement when so desired.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a small, compact, and simple device which may be readily attached one to each side of a window casement, for holding a pair of window curtains or window draperies away from the window jamb, to prevent the curtains from blowing about when the window is opened for ventilation, or when it is necessary to clean the window pane, thereby preventing the curtain or curtains from becoming soiled.

Another object of the invention is to provide a curtain holding device as specified, which will prevent the disarrangement of window curtains or draperies, eliminate the necessity of folding, tieing or pinning, the curtains in an out-of-the-way position, one that will not mar the appearance of a wind ow either from the inside or outside, and a device which may be laced in an out-of-theway inoperative posltion, when it is desired to suspend the curtains in front of a window in the usual manner.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device as specified, which is cheap to manufacture, readily attachable, instantly adjustable, requiring a minimum of space, pleasing in appearance, and one that will not mar or deface the finished surface of a window casement.

Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detail description, and in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective of a window and casement therefor, showing the device as applied and in operative position.

Referring more particularly to the drawlng, the invention comprises a metal base 10 of cup formation, with an oblong annular base flange ll-formed about its open end 12, and extended at right angles thereto. The flange 11 is also provided with a plurality of fu fg1,696,089 V PATENT QFFICB apertures 13 therein for securingthe base 10 to a window casement. The top or closed end 14 of the base 10, is provided with a suitable opening 15 for partial projection therethrough, of a shouldered pivotstud 16. This i stud is further provided with an expansible spring 17, positioned about the shank 18 thereof, with one end of the spring resting on the shoulder formed by the head 19 and the other end of the spring adapted to engage against the underside 20 of the top 14. In order to retain the stud 16 in the base 10, against the tension of the spring 17, the protruding end of the stud 16 is provided with a,

transverse bore 21 which passes through the shank 18 for receiving the straight end portion 22 of a curved curtain engaging arm 23.

The extreme end of the straight portion 22 of the arm is upset or flattened, as indicated at 24:, for retaining and limiting the outward movement of thearm through the stud. The

outer surface of the closed end 14 is also provided with a radiallydisposed,substantially sem1-c1rcular depression or recess 25 on each side of the opening 15 for [receiving the stralght portion 22 of. thetarm 23, in a normal laterally extended curtain engaging position.

In this connection, it is to be noted that at right angles to'a window jamb. The

straight portion 22 of the arm 23, is rotatable while normally disposedin a laterall extended positionin the recesses 25, elimlnates the necessity of providing for a right and left-hand curtain holding device, by the simple expedient'of turning the curved portion of the arm 23 to the right or left, as. the case may be, with the curved portion of the arm 23,;extended in a horizontal plane, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. The free end of the curved arm portion is finished into a ball point 26 for enhancing the appear ance of the device, and eliminating possible injury to the curtains or the like, when retained by the arm 23. I

it will be readily apparent that I have pro vided a neat, simple, and highly efficient de vice for retaining and protecting the free ends of window curtains in an out-of-the-way position, when so desired, and while I have shown and described one practical embodiment of my invention, it is to be noted that I do not limit myself to the exact construction as set forth, but deem myself at liberty to make such changes and modifications as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims. 7

\Vhat I claim is:

1. In a window curtain guard, the combination with an inverted cup shaped base to be attached to a window frame, of a headed stud having a shank mounted in the end of the base, said shank provided with an opening in one of its ends and a head at its other end, a curtain engaging and holding member extending through said opening, spring means on the stud operable between said head and the end of the base, whereby suffieient tension is created to hold said member frictionally in engagement with the outer side of said end of thebase either in a horizontal or a vertical position.

2. In a window curtain guard, the combination with an inverted-cup shaped base to be attached to the side of a window frame,

a of an added stud having a shank mounted in the end of the base, said shank having a shoulder at its inner end and provided with a transverse opening near its outer end, a curtain engaging and holding member with one end portion straight extending through the transverse opening ofthe shank, the other end of said member being curved to engage with the curtain, one end of the base having transverse semi-cylindrical cavities in which the straight portion of the member may engage to hold the member in a horizontal position, a spring surrounding the shank of the stud and operable between said shoulde and the end of the base, whereby sufiicient tension is created to hold said member frietionaily in engagementwith the outer side of said end of the base in a vertical position, or in engagement with the cavities to hold the memher in a horizontal position, said cavities being positioned diametrically opposite each other.

3. In a window curtain guard, the combination with an inverted cup-shaped base to be attached to the side of a window frame, of an added stud having a shank mounted in the end of the base, said shank having a. shoulder at its inner end and provided with a transverse opening near its outer end, a curtain engaging and holding member with one end portion straight extending through the trans verse opening of the shank, the other end of said member being curved to engage with the curtain. one end of the base having transverse semi-cylindrical cavities in which the straight portion of the member may engage to hoid the member in a horizontal position, a spring surrounding the shank of the stud and operable between said shoulder and the end of the base, whereby suiiicient tension is created to hold said member frictionally in engagement with the outer side of said end, of the base in a vertical position, or in engagement with the cavities to hold the member in a horizontal position, said cavities being positioned diametrically opposite each other. a protruding end of the member beyond the stud being offset or flattened at opposite points to limit the member in its longitudinal movement in one direction.
