a foot against the same may partly or wholly sit up in the bed, without. liability of slipping down. The various elements of the device have alarge range of adjustment and the entire device may be bodily. adjusted upon the bed. When not in use, the device may be swung down over the foot or end member of the bed, to occupy an out of the way position. The device is simple in construction,. cheap to manufacture and is adapted to promote comfort to the user.

In the drawings, wherein. for. the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of, my invention, the numeral 5 designates a head of a bed and 6 the foot member, connected by rails-7, supporting in the usual manner a mattress 8. fThe foot member 6 embodies a horizontal rail or top 9.

The foot rest embodies a foot supporting element 10, which is preferably in the form of a fiat rigid plate. The foot supporting member 10 may be formed of metal, wood or the like.

The numeral 11 designates a pair of attaching arms. Each attaching arm includes an outer tubular member 12 and an inner rod member 13, these parts telescoping, as shown. The tubular member 12 is provided with a clamping screw 14, for engagement with the rod member 13, to lock the rod member to the tubular member 12, at a selected longi tudinal position.

In the use of the device, the foot supporting member 10 may be arranged upon the top of the mattress 8,. as shown in Figures 1.and 2. By adjusting the screws 23, the foot supporting .memberlO may be angularly adjusted upon its longitudinalaxis and supported. at theselectedadjusted position. The clamping bolts 14 may be loosened, and the, rod members 13 longitudinally adjusted, so that the foot supporting member 10 may. be positioned a suitable distancefrom the. head .member 5, subsequentlyto. whichthe clamp- ..mg screws 14:, may be adjusted to lockthe rod members 13 to the tubular members 12. Further, by unscrewing the thumb nuts 19, the strap 17 may be loosened upon the rail 9, and the entire device shifted longitudinally of the rail, or transversely of the mattress. When the device is not in use, the rod members 13 are shifted into the tubular members 12, and locked therein, and'the device may then be turned upon the rail 9 so that it will depend upon the outer side of the foot member 6. The foot supporting element 1On1ay be freely swung'upon its pivot 25, away from the screws 23, to lie flat upon the tubular members 12. The device may be used upon the top of the bed clothes or beneath them.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention, herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A foot rest for a bed having an end member including a horizontally arranged bar, a pair of arms adapted to extend longitudinally over the bottom of the bed, means to pivotally connect the outer ends of the arms with the horizontal bar so that said arms may be swung outwardly from the bottom of the bed to occupy depending positions, upon the outer side of the end member of the bed, laterally extending braces carried by the arms and projecting upwardly when the arms occupy the inner generall horizontal position, a generally horizontal foot supporting member pivotally connected with the inner ends of the arms to turn upon its 1011- gitudinal axis, and adjusting elements carried by the braces to engage the foot supporting member to limit its turning movement in one direction, the arrangement being such that when the arms are swung to the outer depending position, the foot rest may freely swing from the adjusting elements and assume a depending position generally parallel with the arms.

2. A foot rest for a bed having an end member including a horizontally arranged bar, a pair of longitudinally adjustable arms adapted to extend'longitudinally over the bottom of the bed, means to pivotally connect the outer ends of the arms with the horizontal bar of the end member so that said arms may be swung outwardly from the bed bottom, to occupy depending positions upon the outer side of said end member, laterally extending braces rigidly carried by the inner ends of the arms and projecting upwardly when the arms are in the inner approximately horizontal position, a generally horizontal foot supporting member pivotally connected with the inner ends of the arms to be "swung upon its longitudinal axis, the foot supporting member being inclined upwardly toward the end member of the bed, adjusting l elements carried by the braces and contacting with the foot supporting member and free from communication therewith, to limit the outward swinging movement of the upper edge of said foot supporting member, the arrangement being such that when the arms are swung to the depending outer position the foot rest may fall to a depending position, generally parallel with said arms. j 3. A foot rest for a bed having an end member including a horizontally arranged bar, a pair of arms adapted to extend longitudinally over the bottom of the bed, means to pivotally connect the outer ends ofthe arms with the horizontal bar so that said arms may be swun outwardly from the bed bottom to occupy epending positions, upon the outer side of the end member, laterally extending braces carried by the inner ends of the arms and rigidly secured thereto and projecting upwardly when the arms are in the inner horizontal position, a generally horizontal foot supporting member arranged near the inner ends of said arms, means 'arranged nearer the lower edge of the foot supporting member than the upper edge and serving to pivotally connect the foot supporting member with said arms so that the said foot supporting member may turn' upon its lon itudinal axis, and adjusting elements carried by the braces and arranged above the last named pivotal connecting means to contact with the foot supporting member and being free from connection therewith, the arrangement being such that when the arms are swung to the outer depending position, the foot rest will automatically fall to a depending position, generally parallel with the arms.
