CYLINDER OF AN INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINE.
Application filed April 3, 1928, Serial No. 266,989, and. in Japan January 30, 1928.
The present invention relates to a cylinder of an internal combustion engine, characterized in that the inner wall of a cylinder head made of sheet of suitable metal such as a steel, copper, etc. is rigidly connected by means of welding or soldering, for instance, to an end of a cylinder of steel, cast iron, etc. and the outer wall which covers the whole outer surface of the said inner wall and overlaps the end of the cylinder is cast of aluminium or its alloy. The object of this invention is to remove the defect due to the leakage of gases from the joint of the cylinder head and the cylinder or from the blow holes formed during the casting of the cylinder head of aluminium or its alloy, and also to simplify the manufacture of such cylinder.
The accompanying drawing illustrates an example of the cylinder of this invention showing a longitudinal section of a part of it. In the drawing, (1) is a cylinder body made of steel, cast iron or a similar metal, and a flange (2) is formed on the outside at the upper end thereof. (3) is an inner wall of the cylinder head made of sheet metal the lower edge of which is fitted to the shoulder (4) provided at the top edge of the said cylinder and is rigidly fixed to the cylinder (1) by welding when the said inner wall is made of metal such as steel, or by soldering when the said inner wall is made of metal such as copper or its alloy. (5) is an outer wall of the cylinder head cast of aluminium or its alloy, which is manuface tured in the following manner :-Molten aluminium or its alloy is poured into a mould, the inside member of which is formed .by the inner wall (3) oi the cylinder head connected with the cylinder as described above, the outer member being suitably formed. Thus, the cylinder head can be cast in any desired form. As the said outer aluminium wall fits at the inner circumference of its lower edge to the flange (2) of the cylinder, the said wall is formed in rigid connection with the cylinder body and the A inner wall of the cylinder head.
When it is desired to provide a valve seat in the cylinder head, a valve seat (6) made of suitable metal is previously fixed to the said inner wall (3) and the outer wall of the cylinder head is cast in the similar way as hereinbefore described by means of a suitable mould forming a port (7). When it is further desired to provide radiating fins (8), core plates (9) made of the same metal as that of the inner wall (3) of the cylinder head are welded or soldered to the said inner wall (3) previously and the fins (8) are cast 50 over the said core plates, holes (10) pierced through the core plate (9) serving to strengthen the connection of the said plates and the casting.
In the usual practice of attaching a cylc5 inder head of aluminium or its alloy to a cylinder of steel or cast iron, it is very difiicult to obtain a rigid connection of the two members, and gases are apt to leak from the joint of the said two members. Special arts to are required in manufacture to prevent the leakage of gases perfectly, which inevitably increases the cost. Moreover, when the cylinder head is manufactured by casting, blow holes are liable to be formed in the casting of such metals, and therefore gases may leak out through these holes. The present invention removes such defects as describedabove and makes the working easy. The cylinder head consists of an inner wall so made of a thin metallic plate and an outer wall cast thereon, Therefore, gas-tight connection of the said metallic plate to the cylinder end may be accomplished easily by means of welding or soldering, and as the as said connected portion is covered and secured rigidly by the cast outer wall, the leakage of gases from the joint oi. the cylinder and the head does not occur. The internal surface of the outer wall of the cylinder no head is wholly covered by the sheet metal as described above and the said thin sheet is pressed to the outer wall of the head by the internal pressure, and resists the internal pressure in cooperation with the outer wall. at Therefore, even if there exist in the outer wall more or less blow holes formed during casting, the leakage of gases does not occur. Thus, according to the present invention, such cylinders as said above can be made its more simply and less expensively than usual. t the same time, the leakage of gases is entirely prevented. Moreover, when the radiating fins (8) are provided on the outer surface of the cylinder head as shown in we the figure, if the inner wall (3) of the head and the core plates (9) are made of metal of high thermal conductivity such as copper, the heat generated in the cylinder will be quickly transmitted through the said inner nu wall and the core plates to the outside of the c linder, thus enabling eflicient cooling of the cylinder to be efiected.
I claim:
1. Cylinder of an internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder body, an inner Wall of the cylinder head made of sheet metal and fixed to an end of the said cylinder by a connecting means such as welding or soldering, and an outer wall of the cylinder head which is made of aluminium or its alloy and cast on the said inner wall so as to cover its whole outer surface and to be connected with the-end of the cylinder body.
2. Cylinder of an internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder body provided with a flange at an end, an inner wall of the cylinder head made of sheet metal and fixed to the end of the said cylinder by a connecting means such as welding or soldering, and an outer wall of the cylinder head marten which is made of aluminium or its alloy and cast on the said inner wall so as to cover its whole outer surface and to be connected with the end of the cylinder body.
3. Cylinder of an internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder body, an inner wall of the cylinder head made with sheet metal and fixed to an end of the said cylinder by a suitable connecting means such as welding or solderin which are made of sheet metal fixed to the outer surface of the said inner wall and provided with holes for keeping cast material therein and an outer wall of the cylinder head which is made of aluminium or its alloy and cast so as to cover the whole outer surface of the said inner wall and to form radiating fins over the said core plates.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my core plates for fins
