Abstract
567,660. Cylinder-heads. WESLAKE, H. July 12, 1943, No. 11319. [Class 7 (ii)] A cylinder-head for an internalcombustion engine comprises two main parts, the inner part 10 abutting the top of the cylinder 12 being made of metal of high heat conductivity such as bronze or other copper alloy and provided with the combustion space 13 and the outer part 11 made of metal of less conductivity, such as cast iron being provided with the inlet and exhaust passages 15. The valve seats 14 and the sparking plug socket may be either in the part 11, Fig. 1, or in the part 10, Fig. 2. Cooling jacket recesses 26, 18, in the respective head parts, communicate with the jacket spaces 20 of the cylinders. The wall 22 of the combustion space may be shaped as described in Specification 565,394. The two head parts may either be welded or brazed together or separated by a gasket 42, Fig. 2. In the Fig. 2 modification, the induction manifold 23 is cast integrally with the outer head portion. Two cooling spaces 26, 27 are separated by a transverse wall provided with flanged tubular members 30 which enclose the valve guides and control the flow between the spaces. The outer space is closed by a plate 33 to which the valve guides are secured. In Fig. 2, the gasket is perforated to permit flow of cooling liquid between the head portions, but in some cases the gasket 42 may completely separate the cooling spaces of the two head portions. The two spaces may be connected in series so that the inner head portion is the first to receive the cooling liquid. The induction passages may be provided with heatinsulating lining such as a tube of metal of low conductivity or of moulded asbestos cement.
