To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT HILTON, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements on Trunk-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to the class of trunkfast-enings in which a padlock is used; and consists in providing a socket for the reception of the padlock, and also in so combining a strap with said socket that the padlock is held in its place therein for the purpose of protecting the padlock from injury, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.

Figure 1 is a trunk, showing a fastening with my device. Fig. 2 shows a fastening, on a largerscale, with my invention applied to it.

A is the body of the trunk, and B is the top of the same. The fastening which I have shown consists of two sockets, a and b, through which is passed atongue, 0, to the lower end of which the padlock is locked. Heretoforc,

when padlocks were used they were allowed to hang loose and unprotected, and were exposed to the danger of striking and being struck by other objects, whereby they were very much damaged or entirely knocked 05. By the use of my invention this danger is avoided. g is a socket shaped to receive the padlock d, and as deep or a little deeper than the thickness of the padlock. This socket is made of metal and is attached to the trunk, as shown, and as the padlock is completely embedded in it, as it were, it protects it from any blows or concussions that would otherwise injure it.
