LOCKING DEVICE FOR BUCKLES.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT GURD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thorntown, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices for Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for locking ties and more especially a device for locking strap buckles or the like, and has for its object to provide a device of that character which may be used on suit cases, boxes, bundles, etc, carried as baggage and going through the mail or parcel post.
A further object is to provide a device of this character that will be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and one that can be attached and detached at will.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel details of construction of parts more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a suit case showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of my improved device; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a small piece of leather or other material adapted to be placed within the lock casing when it is to be used for locking a knot.
1 indicates a suit case provided with the usual straps 2 and buckles 3 for holding the same in a closed position. 4: indicates my improved device inclosing said buckles and adapted to be held in a locked position by the small padlock 5 or by any suitable means. This device is so formed and constructed that it will not interfere with the tightening and loosening of the buckle and consists of a body portion 6 formed of a single piece of metal bent to form a front end portion; 7; a rear end piece 8, and sides 9; said sides being cut away as shown at 10 to provide space for the manipulation of the buckle when the device is in the open position. 11 and 12 indicate openings cut in the ends 7 and 8 through which the ends of the strap are adapted to pass. A top plate 13 hinged as at 14 to the rear end 8, is also formed of a single piece of metal and is bent to form Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 615,98
When it is desired to use this device in connection with a cord, or rope, for locking a knot, it is necessary only to place small pieces of leather or other material 20, as shown in Fig. 5, in the body portion 6 against the end pieces 7 and 8. The ends of the cord are then passed through the hole 21 and knotted and the top is closed and locked. in this connection it may be seen that various sizes of cord or rope may be used, by simply providing the leather pieces or other material 20 with difierent size openings.
The device may be made of any size and shape, and is adapted to inclose a knot or buckle of a cord or strap which binds a package and to prevent the same from being opened or tampered with by anyone not having the proper key.
It is not to be understood that I limit myself to the details of construction and combination of parts herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. 1 therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claim.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by United States Letters Patent is:
The combination with a member having the ends thereof united together, of a locking device preventing the removal of said united ends comprising a sheet metal bottom plate provided with upwardly disposed end portions, and upwardly disposed side pieces immediately adjacent said end portions; a staple secured to one of said end portions; said end portions being each cut away to receive the ends of the united member, and the side pieces providing spaces giving access to the united ends; a sheet metal top plate hingedly connected to the upper edge of an end portion of the bottom plate; said top plate having downwardly disposed side portions and a downwardly disposed end portion adapted to close the In testimony whereof I have hereunto set spaces between the side pieces of the bottom my hand in presence of two subscribing witplate, and to overlie an end portion of the nesses.
bottom plate; said top plate provided with ALBERT GURD. 5 an aperture to receive the staple; and a Witnesses:
locking device for engaging with the staple, ED. MARTIN,
substantially as described. JAMES P. LYON.
