COMBINED SAFETY RAZOR, HAIR TRIMMER, AND COMB.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combined safety razor, hair trimmer and comb, and has for its pr1- mary object the provision of a four-edged razor, a blade s acer, a two-sized hair trimmer and a doub e comb, either as a complete manufactured article or as an attachment for well-known safety razors on the market at the present time. I

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated which will have greater efficiency than the ordinary single or double-edged razors, and which in addition to its use as a razor may be utilized for trimming and combing hair.

A further object of the invention is toprovide certain parts for use in combination with a safety razor whereby additlonal advantages are obtained at exceeding small cost.

A still further object of the inventionis to provide a spacer for the bade as an integral part of the guard so that the blade will be spaced from the guard sufliciently to permit use of the entire cutting edges of said blade, thus virtually increasing said cutting edge. The spacing of the blade from the guard also prevents hair from becommg clamped between the blade and guard and makes it much easier for the razor to be cleaned. f I

With these and other ends in-view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which:

Fig. 1, isa plan view of a combined safety razor, hair trimmer and comb constructed in accordance with my invention, the parts being shown in the positions when the device is used as a razor.

Fig. 11', is a perspective view of the blade protector plat v In carrying out my invenion as herein embodied, particular reference being made to Figs. 1. to 6 inclusive, 15 represents a suitable handle provided with a threaded socket 16 at its inner end for the reception of a threaded stud 17, projectin from the center of the (A square clamp 18 w ich is of concavo-convex formation or curved from one edge to another, as plainly shown in Fig. 5. The stud 17 projects from the concave face of the clamp, and in addition to this, posts 19 are carried by the clamp and project from the concave face thereof, one post being located on each side of the stud. The posts 19 are smooth or plain. l

Within the concave surface of the clamp may lie a four-ed ed blade 20 having a central hole 21 and our other holes 22, one of the latter being located adjacent each of the blade edges midway the ends thereof, so that when the hole 21 is in registrationwith the stud 17 two of the other holes will register with the posts 19, and the blade flexed to correspond with the curvature of the clamp, particularly when forced into it by means of the guard 23.

The guard 23 is also of rectangular shape, although slightly longer than it is wide, and along one of the shorter edges are formed a num er of fine teeth 24, while along the opposite edge are formed a number of coarse teeth 25, and each set of teeth extends along their entire length unobstructed and in work-\ ing condition.

3, the device may then be used as a ha1r trimmer, at which time the teeth will act as guides to cause the strands of'hair to be properly held out for the, cutting or trim- ,ming operation, and when the blade is thus positioned, it is advisable to protect it against breakage due to forcing the edge thereof about the hole 21 into the counterbore 28 through the medium of a blade protection plate 30 which may be quite narrow as shown in Fig. 11 and provided with a central hole 31 for registration with the stud and holes 32, one on each side of the hole 31, for registration with the posts 19 and, as shown in Fig. 3, this blade protector plate 15 inserted between the inner end of the handle 15 and the blade prior to screwing the handle on the stud.

Whilethe guard is of concavo-convex formation, the curvatures ofthe two surfaces are not concentric, and in fact one is eccentric to the other so that it gradually increases in thickness from one end to the other, thereby providing thin and thick teeth, as well as fine and coarse ones, and while it is not essential that the coarse teeth be the thick ones, it is preferable that such be the case and the invention is so shown.

In Figs. 7 to 11 inclusive, I have shown a structure which is particularly adapted as an attachment to an ordinary safety razor, in which case the clamp .33 is similar to the clamp 18, except that in place of the stud and posts, 17 and 19, respectively, three holes are formed, one of which is-designated by the numeral 34 and the other two by the numeral 35, the said holes 35 being arranged so that one is on each side of the hole 34, and these holes are located so as to register with the stud 36 arran ed centrally of the clamping member 37 an the posts 38, one on each side of the stud.

As shown in Fig. 8, the blade 20 sets in the concave face of the clamp 33, and the guard 23 then engages the concave face of the blade, so that when the handle 15 is screwed on to the stud, the clamping member 37 will be drawn toward the inner end of the handle to hold the parts between them.

Byreversing the position of the blade so that it rests against the concave face of the guard as shown in Fig. 9 and by the removal of the clamp 33, the parts may then be fastened together, and the device used as a hair sembled asshown in Figure 9 the edges of the M clamp 18 which overlie the serrated edges 24 and 25 of the guard 23 are spaced from the latter such that said clamp edges constitute fulcrums. for the respective cutting edges of the blade, thereby greatly facilitating the hair-trimming operation.

While I have illustrated the device for use as a comb in Fig.7 by the elimination of the blade and guard, it may be desirable under some conditions to use the comb without the handle 15, in which case said handle and the clamping member 37 are removed and the guard itself grasped by the user.

The blade is constructed of suitable flex ible material and normally is fiat, but may be flexed in two opposite directions so that after two of its edges have been used to the fullest extent, said blade may be released and given a one-fourth turn so as to present the other two edges for shaving or .hair cutting purposes.

From the foregoing description it will be particularly noted that I have provided acertain number of elements so combined as to produce a complete safety razor having four distinct cutting edges, a hair trimmer adapted to use any of the four edges of the blade with either of two sets of teeth for determining the length of hair to remain, the said teeth also'being usable as fine or coarse combs.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the splrit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is:

1. In a combined safety razor and hairtrimmer, in combination, a clamp of transversely curved cross section, a transversely curved guard of a transverse width greater than that of said clamp such that when said clamp and guard are assembled certain edges of the latter project beyond corresponding edges of the former, a handle for clamping said clamp and guard in assembled relation, and a multiple-edged blade arranged to be disposed either between said clamp and said guard for use as a razor, or between said handle and said "guard for use as a hair-trimmer, the said edges of said clamp, in the latter instance, operating respectively as fulcrums for the cutting edges of said blade.

2. In a combined safety razor and hairtrimmer, in combination, a clamp of transversely curved. cross section, a transversely curved guard of a transverse width greater than that of said clamp such that when said clamp and guard are assembled certain edges of the latter project beyond corresponding edges of the former, the pro'ecting edges of said guard being provide respectively with relatively fine and relatively coarse comb-like teeth, a handle for clamping said clamp and guard in assembled relation, and a multiple-edged blade arranged to be disposed either between said clamp and said guard for use as a razor, or between said handle and said guard for use as a hair-trimmer, the said edges of said clamp, in the latter instance, operating respectively as fulcrums for the cutting edges of said blade.

3. In a combined safety razor and hairtrimmer, in combination, a clamp, a guard arranged to be clamped in assembled relation with said clamp, the dimension of said guard in one direction being reater than the corresponding dimension of said clamp whereby to provide said guard with oppositel projecting unfprotected edges, the latter ing spaced rom the corresponding edges of said clamp, a handle for clam ing said clamp and guard together, and a ouredged blade arranged to be selectively clamped between said clamp, and guard or between said guard and handle for use respectively as a razor or hair-trimmer, two

In an ap liance of the character described, in com ination, a clam of concaveconvex cross-section, a guard 0 similar cross section arranged to be clamped in assembled relation with said clamp, the concave surface of said guard being eccentric to the convex surface thereof whereby to provide opposed edges of difi'erent thickness, said edges being re ectively rovided with a set of fine com -like teet and a set of coarse comb-like teeth, a four-edged blade arranged to be clamped against the concave surface of said guard with the two opposed cutting edges thereof underlying said teeth and the other two edges covered by said guard, and means for clamping all of said parts in assembled relation.

5. In an appliance of the character described, in combination, a clamp of transversely curved cross section, a guard of substantially similar cross section the transverse width of which is reater than and the concave surface of wIr to that of said clamp, a blade having two pairs of opposed cutting edges arranged to be flexed against said concave surface of the guard suchthat the opposed edges of one pair are spaced at respectively different distances from the corresponding edges of said clamp, and a handle removabl secured to said clamp for maintaining al of said parts in assembled relation.

6. In an appliance of the character described, in combination, a clamp having a pair of opposed parallel edges, a ard arranged to be clamped in assembl with said clamp, said guard being of transrelation.
