L. H. BIRRELL DOUBLE LOCK BOX Filed March 1926 anoewdoc Patented Aug. 14, 1928.
UNITED s'rArEs PATENT OFFICE.
LAWRENCE H. BIRRELL, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, ASSIGNOR F ONE-HALF T0 ALEXANDER N. ROSENBAUM, DE LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
DOUBLE LOCK BOX. 6 j
Application filed March 4, 1926. 7 Serial No. 92,252.
The present invention relates to box construction and more particularly to boxes constructed of heavy cardboard or the like and designed for containing suits, overcoats I or the like.
The primary object of the invention is to construct a box of this character, wherein the tongues formed at the ends of the end portions of the box will be securely locked Within slits formed in the side members of the box and may only be released by bending the side members at points adjacent to the slits.
A further object of the invention is the 16 provision of a double lock tongue designed to distribute the strain usually directed to the upper portion of the slit in which the tongue is positioned, to the lower portion of the slit, thereby greatly strengthening the box construction and adding materially to the wearing qualities of the box.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the comination and arrangementof parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of theinvention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of a blank of which the box is constructed.
Figure 2 is a fragmental elevational view of one end of the box.
Figure 3 is a fragmental elevational view illustrating the positions taken by the tongue and side members of the box, when the tongue is to be removed.
Figure 4 is a perspective view thereof taken from a point within the box.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the body portion includes a bottom 5, side mem bers 6 and end members 7 which when folded upwardly along the dotted lines as indicated in Figure 1 will take the form of a box.
Tongues 8 extend laterally from the end members 7, and as shown, each tongue is formed with an outer inclined edge 9 and an inner inclined edge 10, the inner inclined edge being shorter than the outer inclined edge merges into a substantially straight edge 11 disposed in parallel relation with the edge 9 for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described. A
The extremity of each tongue is enlarged at 12 and is constructed to provide shoulders 13 and 14 respectively, which shoulders are adapted tocooperate with the walls of the slots to lock the tongues against displacement.
Formed in the side members 6 and arranged adjacent to the ends thereof, are slots which include inclined portions 15 that merge into the relatively straight portions 16 disposed in parallel relation with the edges of the side members, there being provided locking slits 17 at the ends of the slits 16. I
When the blank is folded to provide a box, the side members are folded upwardly and the end members are folded upwardly, the end members being bent so that the tongues will extend inwardly in a manner as shown by Figure 2 of the drawing, whereupon the shoulders 13 will engage within end members and side members in their upright positions.
Should it be desired to release the tongues from the side members, it is necessary to bend the box inwardly at its corners, whereupon the enlargements of the tongues are pressed downwardly into engagement with the bottom of the boxas shown by Figure 4, and the shoulder 13 falls opposite to the slit 17. By applying pressure at this point slit 17 is opened permitting the tongues to slide under portion A and be released.
I claim:
A foldable box blank including a. rectangular body portion, said body portion having horizontal. slits disposed in parallel relation with the side edges thereof, said body portion having substantially short into the first mentioned slits at points intertioned slits, the upper corners of the tongues mediate the ends thereof, end members eX- being disposed within the locking slits when tending from the ends of the blank, tongues the sides and ends are bent upwardly in the 10 extending from the side edges of the end formation of a box.
members, said tongues having inclined edges In testimony that I claim the foregoing as defining shoulders, and corners, said tongues my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature.
adapted to be positioned in the first men- LAWRENCE H. BlRRELL.
