BERRY-BOX.
Application filed Eepteinber 22, 1220.
1/ 0 all w 710m it may 0011 669% Be it known that I, EDWARD Errrnenn Gen-11x, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of rloquiam, in the county of Grays Harbor and State of ashington, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Berry-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in berry boxes, and has for its object to provide a box of the character specified, wherein the box is composed of two strips of suitable material, capable of being folded one into a frame, and the other into shape to form a bottom cooperating with the frame and supported thereby, without the necessity for securing means of any character.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved box folded,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the box with the parts separated,
Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the blanks extended,
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the other blank.
in the present embodiment of the invention, the box is composed of two blanks, 1 and 2, each being a strip of suitable material, as for instance heavy paper, paste board, composition board, or thin wood, cut to suitable length and width.
The strip 1 is creased transversely on lines 3, which are spaced at equal distances, and which divide the strip into five sections. At one side edge the strip has notches 4, and the strip also. has notches 5, one of which is at one edge of the strip, and the other at the other. That is, one notch 5, is at the side which has the notches 4. The notches 4 and 5 have walls which converge toward the center longitudinal line or axis of the strip, but the lines of the notches 4 do not meet, the said notches not being of sufficient depth to permit such meeting.
The notches 5 extend approximately half the width of the strip, while the notches 4 extend aproximately one-third the width of the strip, and the bottom of each notch 4 has a straight wall which is parallel with the side edges of the strip.
The crease lines 3 separate the strip into five similar sections. The notches 4 are in those sections which are on each side of the Specification of Letters Patent. Pggtgnted Anal, 26, 1321,
Serial No. 412,016.
central section; that is, these notches have between them and between each notch and the end of the strip, one of the sections. The notches 5 are in the end section.
The strip 2 is at each end reduced in width to form a tongue 6, and these tongues are connected to the body of the strips by portions 7, whose side edges converge toward the tongues. The strip 2 is separated into sections by crease lines 8 and 9. The crease lines 8 are spaced apart the same distance as 1e crease lines 3, and that portion of the strip between them forms the bottom of the box. The crease lines 9, which like the lines 8 are transverse to the strip, are about midway the length of those portions of the strip which have the inclined side edges.
In use, the ends of the strip 1 are first connected by bending the strip on the crease lines 3, and booking the notches 5 into each other. The side walls of the box are thus formed.
Now those portions of the strip 2 which are outside the crease lines 8 are folded up, as shown in Fig. 3, and those portions of the strip which are outside the crease lines 9 are folded down upon the folded up portions first mentioned. The folded strip 2 is now dropped into the folded strip 1, with the tongues 6 at the notches 4. Each tongue is then passed from without inward through the adjacent DOl'Jll, between the strip 1 and strip 2, and those portions 7 of the strip 2 engage outside of the side walls of the box, thus supporting the bottom in the box, and preventing disengagement of the tongue 6. Those portions of the strip between the crease lines 8 and 9, are of less length than the width of the strip 1, so that the bottom of the box, when the box is completed, is spaced above the lower end of the strip 1.
In order to permit the improved box to be disassembled, in order that it may be stored in small space and flat, it is only necessary to disengage the tongues 6, to release the ends of the strip 1, and the two strips may be laid flat upon each other, or, when the bottom is removed. the frame formed by the strip 1 may be flattened.
I claim:
A box comprising a frame having walls provided with oppositely located notches uniformly enlarged toward their upper ends and opening out through the upper edge of the frame a bottom having upstanding sides provided with reduced triangular portions arranged exteriorly of said frame and closing said notches, the edge portions of said reduced portions being extended beyond the side Walls of said notches, and narrow downwardly directed tongues formed at the lower ends of said reduced portions and extende through the lower ends of said notches, said narrow downwardly directed tongues being 10 detachahly arranged between the inner sides of the frame and the adjacent sides of said bottom:
