I I PENCIL HOLDER/ AND POCKET CLIP.
I Application filed May 29, 1926, Serial No. 112,501. Renewed November 3, 1927.
This invention relates topencil holders, and more particularly to a combined pencil holder and clip which is adapted ,to remain attached to theedge of the pocket of the user while the pencil is being used, and which is adapted to hold the pencil when the latter is not inuse.
One object of this invention is to provide a pencil holder of the above nature adapted to be formed from a single piece of sheet metal.
A further object is to provide a pencil holder which will besimple in construction, inexpensive tomanufact-ure, easy to manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance,
and very'etlicient andv durable in use.
'l/Vith these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated .on the accompanying drawings, one form in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in, practice.
Fig. 1 represents a front view of the pencil holder-,showing-the clip adapted to project over the edge of, the pocket.
7 Fig.2 is aside view of the same. 3 Fig. 3 is a 'planview of the sheet metal blank from which the holder is for-med up by stamping and bending, v
- Fig.4 is a top view of the pencil holder and clip. H
Fig; 5 is a transverse sectional View of the same taken along the line 55 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 6 is a front View of the pencil holder showing its appearancewhen attached to the edge of a vest pocket, and with a pencil located therein.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates the body portion of the pencil holder, said body portion preferably having a straight top edge. The body portion 10 has a pair of slightly converging strips 11 and 12 depending therefrom at the outer sides thereof, said strips therefrom a tapered central section or loop 14, within which is a slightly tapered pocket clip 15, the top' 16 of said clip 15 being preferably made convex outwardly, and the bottom 17 thereof being concave outwardly, the concave sectionbeing provided witlra central longitudinal rib 18 for strengthening its construction. In order to facilitate the insertion, of the pencil afternse, the upper part ofthe pencil holder is flared outwardly at 19. v i
In the process'of manufacturing the completed device, the stamped-out blank, SllOWDwlILFlg. 3, is preferably bent around suitable forms, not shown, into *a substan tially cylindrical tube. The stripsll and '12 are bent within the outline of the tube so that the resiliency of the metal of said strips will causethem to clamp the pencil pocket.
-In operation, when the user desires, to write with the pencil he will remove it from the holder, the latter remaining in the pocket 20. When throughusing'the pencil, the-user will insert it, point downward, through the flared opening 19 of the pencil holder, and push it downwardly until it reaches the position shown in Fig. 6.
s; Onev advantage of the present invention is that when the blank is formed up into its final shape, the strips 11 and 12 by reason of their tapered construction will not overlap or interfere with each other in any way but will be maintained in. a slightly separated position.
'A further advantage is that the holder will carry short pencils equally aswell as long pencils, and thin pencils as well as thick pencils.
A further advantage of this invention is that when the user has a long pencil in his pocket, there will be no danger of breaking the point of the pencil or having the hold ing clip slip off of the edge of the pocket when the user bends over. This is for-the reason that the pencil will be held by the resilient strips.
. Moreover, since the holder always remains in the pocket, it can never become lost, and the edge of the pocket will not wear out due to the constant rubbing as was the case with the former types of clips which were permanently attached to the pencil.
The use of the present invention also facilitates the replacing of a pencil in the pocket, as it is much easier to insert the pencil in the flared mouth of the holder than to force a clip over the edge of the pocket.
While there has been disclosed in, this.
specification one form in which the inven 1 1011 may be embodied, it is to be understood but may be modified and embodied in Various ether forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, i'rliat is claimed as new, and for which it is desiredto secure Letters Patent, is;
1., In .a pencil holder, a body portion bent to cylindrical shape, a central loop and a pair of: side tongues depending said bodyportion for clamping upon a pencil, and a clip connected to said body portion and located within said loop, said clip and loop being adapted to clampopposite sides of a pocket for holding said pencil holder thereon while the pencil is being used.
2.- In a pencil holder, a body portion bent to cylindrical-shape, a central loop and a pair of side tongues depending from said body portion for clamping upon a'pencil,
and a clip connected to said body portion and located within said loop, said clip and loop being located on the opposite sides of a pocket for attaching the pencil holder thereto, said side tongues converging slightly downwardly whereby overlapping will be prevented.
3. In a pencil holder, a body portion bent to cylindrical shape, a central loop and a from v pair of sidetongues :depending' from said body portion for. clamplng' upon a. pencil, anda clip connected to said body portion and locatedwithin'said loop for attaching said holder to the edge of a pocket, sald pocketedge being clamped between said clip L portion for clamping upon .a pencil, 'and a clip connected to said body portion and located within saidloop, said clipand loop being adapted to clamp opposite sides ofa pocket for holdingsaid pencil holder thereon while the pencil is being used.
5. Ina pencil holder, a-Ibody portion bent side tongue depending from said body portion for clamping upon a pencil, and a clip connected to said body portion and located to cylindrical shape, a central loop and a' within said loop, said clip and-loop being 7 adapted to clamp opposite sides of a pocket for holding saidpencil-holder thereon while the pencil is being used.
6. In a pencil holder, a body portion bent to tubular shape, a central loop and a side tongue depending; from said body portion for clamping upon a pencihanda clipconnected to said body portion and located within said loop, said clip and loop being adapted to clamp opposite sides of a pocket for holding said pencil holder thereon while the pencil is being used. c
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature to this specification.
