INVENTOR WiTNESSES ATTORNEY WILLIAM JOS. BRUCKS, OF DUNLAY, TEXAS.
PENCIL SHARPENER AND HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 27, 1916.
Application filed September 21, 1915. Serial No. 51,892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM JOSEPH Bnucus, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunlay, in the county of Medina and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil Sharpeners and Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved pencil sharpener and holder and the principal object of the invention is to provide. a device of the character described which is so constructed that it will include in one simple device a pencil sharpener and a pencil holder together with a clip for connecting the holder with a coat pocket.
Another object of theinvention is to so construct this device that it may be cheaply manufactured from sheet metal and stamped from a suitable blank and bent to assume the proper shape.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this device that it will only require a small amount of metal to make the same.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein 2- Figure 1 is a view of the blank from which the improved pencil sharpener and holder is formed. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation showing the holder applied to a pencil. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the holder taken at right angles to the view in Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a bottom plan view of the holder.
This pencil holder is formed from a sheet metal blank shown in Fig. 1, the blank having an elongated body portion 10 from which there extends the arms 11 and 12, side wing 13 and tongue 14 which terminates in the gripping ball 15. The side arms 11 and 12 are bent along the dotted lines 16 and 17 and coiled to form the pencil gripping elements or sleeves 18 and 19 and the tongue 14: is bent back along the dotted lines 20 to extend in spaced relation to the body portion 10 and provide the coat engaging clamp 21,
as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The arcuate wing 13 which is provided with a sharpened cutting edge 22 is now coiled to provide the pencil sharpener 23 and the pencil holder and sharpener is ready for use.
lVhen in use the pencil 24 is passed through the gripping sleeves 1S and 19 and the holder is then connected with the pocket and retained in engagement therewith by means of the clamp 21. From an inspection of-Figs. 2, 3 and 4: it will be readily seen that with this device the cloth of the pocket will be crimped somewhat when the holder is connected with the pocket and therefore the holder will be more tightly held in place and prevented from having transverse movement. It is of course understood that this device will be formed of resilient material such as sheet steel which may be tempered to provide a sharp cutting edge and that therefore a very good pencil sharpener will be provided as well as a very efiicient holder which will securely grip the pencil and also securely grip the cloth forming the pocket of the coat.
What is claimed is 1. A pencil sharpener and holder comprising a body portion, pencil holding means extending from one side of said body portion beyond the outer face thereof, pencil sharpening means extending from the opposite side of said body portion beyond the outer face thereof, and a clamping tongue extending along said body portion in close proximity to the outer face thereof between said pencil holding and sharpening means.
2. A pencil holder and sharpening device comprising a body portion, pencil gripping means extending from said body portion beyond the outer face thereof, pencil sharpening means extending from said body portion beyond the outer face thereof, and a clamping element'extending along said body portion between said pencil gripping means and pencil sharpening means and extending beyond the outer face thereof a less extent than the gripping and sharpening means whereby material engaged by said clamping element will be crimped between said pencil gripping and sharpening means.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J OS. BRUCKS. Witnesses: IDA Brsonorr, FRANK BRUCKS.
