TYPE-BAR CARRIER.
Application filed March 5, 1927. Serial No. 173,153.
The object of this invention is to provide an individual type bar carrier for multigraph or other similar machines by means of which a name, address or legend may be printed in any desired positionon an otherwise finished sheet and this address or legend quickly changed on each sheet fed thru the multigraph.

In theseveral figures of thedrawing like reference numerals indicate like parts. For advertisingpurposes it is often desirable to imprint on each of a numberof otherwise finished sheets an individual name, address or legend. In order to do this either ahighpriced printing machine designed to produce thistype of work must be used, or
the imprint to be added must be made practically by hand. The type bar carrier. forming the subject. matter of this invention makes it possible, however, to perform this type of work on the ordinary multigraph, or other similar machine, andwhile it may not do it quite rapidly asis possible with the machine designed for this type ofwork, the work is done as wellin the multigraph with the aid of the type bar carrier, and farbetter and faster than is possible with a manual or smi-manual method. 1 i In Figure 1 we. have illustrated in section a printing drum of a multigraph or other similar machine and its associated parts with the individual type bar carrier mounted on the printing drum. The type bar carrier proper in the .form illustrated in Figures 2 and 3'co1nprises three plates 5, 6 and 7. Plates 7 and 5 form the front and back of the type bar carrier and are of the same. height and are beveled at'the bottom to form the angular sides of an inverted trough or channel in the bottom of the type bar carrier. The bottom of the center plate 6 provides the base of this inverted channel and for this reason does not extend flush with the bottom of the ends of the The center plate 6 also extends only part way to the top of the type carrier; so that thetop edge of the center plate forms the bottom of the type bar receiving channel of which the sides are formed by the upper ends of the front and back plates 7 and 5 respectively.
The back plate 5 is fastened to the center. plate by means of the screws 8 and 9which pass thru suitable holes in the back plate and are threaded into the center plate 6. The front plate-7 is fastened to the center plate by means the screw 10, which passes thru a suitable hole in the front plate 7, and is also threadedintothe center plate.
On the back plate 5 are carried the guide lugs 11 and 12. These lugs are suitably fastened to the plate by means of a screw at the top and bottom thereof. In each of the guide lugs is provided an angular groove 13 into which the bar 4 of the type, drum is adapted to engage. The type bar carrier is mounted on the type drum by first sliding the guide lugs 11 and 12 in engagement. with the bar 4 of the type drum until this bar rests solidly in the bottom of the angular grooves 18 in each of these guide lugs. The i bottom of the type bar carrier is then sprung in place over the supporting shaft so that the inverted channel thereof straddles a portion of the perimeter of the shaft. In order to brace the type bar carrier to steady it and hold it in a radial position in the type-drum the carrier is provided with an adjusting screw 14. The screw passes thru the type bar carrier being threaded in the plates 5 and 6 and passing thru a reamed hole in the plate 7. The screw 14 projects from the back of the type bar carrier and is adjustedthere-1 in until the endof this screw rests firmly against the periphery of thebar 3 as illustrated in Figure The type bar carrier is clamped in place against endwise movement by the. clamping screws 15 and 16 that are threaded into the guide lugs 11 and 12 respectively. The clamping screws are conical at the outer ends and project into the angular groove 13 of the guide lugs. After the type bar carrler is properly placed on the type drum and the bar 4 is located in the guide grooves, the clamping screws are threaded into the guide lugs until their conical ends engage the periphery of the rod 4 and force "this bar 1n place into the angular grooves of the guide lugs until the bar is firmly clamped in place therein.
After the type bar carrier has been mounted on the type drumas described and illustrated it is ready to receive the type slug 17 containing the type of the name, address or legend to be printed by means of the type carrier. This type slug is preferably cast in a single piece with a linotype machine or other machine, but may be a line of individuahtypes properly held together so that it can be handled and placed into the type bar carrier. The channel formed in the top of the type carrier has a width that is slightly smaller than the width of one of the type slugs that is to be inserted therein. In insertingthe slug, the upper ends of the plates 5 and 7 forming the sides of the channel are therefore slightly spread apart so that after the type slug is place in the channel suflicient tension is placed against the side of the type slug by the yielding sides of the channel that will hold the type slug in place in the type bar carrier.
For the purpose of holding the type slug in a predetermined position in the type bar carrier, a lag 20 is provided at one end of one of the plates. This lug slightly projects across the end of the channel so that it forms a" stop for any type slug that is inserted into the channel. The fact that the plates 5 and 7 are attached to the center plate 6 near their lower ends makes it possible for them to slightly yield when forced apart at the top and it is the yielding pressure of these plates and the lug at the end of the channel that holds the type slug in the proper position on top of the type carrier.
After the type slug is inserted in the carrier the type drum is turned in a counterclockwise direction until the type has been brought in contact with one or both of the ink rollers 21 and 22. The type is thus inked and is then moved back in a clockwise direction in a complete revolution of the type drum during which the inked type is impressed on the sheet fed thru the multigraph while" passing the platen roller 23. At the end of the revolution the type slug is pulled out of the channel in the type carrier and a new one inserted in its place so that a repetition of the operation of the multigraph as above set forth will produce another printed impression by the new type slug on'the next sheet fed thru the machine.
A paper shim may be placed between the front plate 7 and the center plate 6 in order to slightly increase the width of the receiving channel of the type bar carrier in order to adjust the width of the channel to correspond to the thickness of the type slug to be inserted therein. For larger size type slugs the width of the receiving channel is increased by the use of a. thicker center plate 6. Y
We claim:
1. A type bar carrier forprinting drums of multigraphs having a central supporting shaft, comprising a supporting member, an inverted channel formed at the bottom of said supporting member and adapted to straddle a portion of the perimeter of said central supporting shaft, a channel at the top of said supporting member, a yielding side provided on said channel adapted to yieldingly hold a type slug in place in said channel, means for locking said supporting member in place in said type drum.
2. A type bar carrier for printing drums of multigraphs having a central supporting shaft and a pair of spacing bars, comprisin a supporting member; an inverted channe at-the bottom ofsaid supporting member, a channel at the top of said supporting memher, a clamping member carried by said sup porting member and adapted to engage one of said spacing bars, a bracing member carried by said supporting member and adapted to engage the other of said spacing bars to a hold said supporting member in a radial position in said printing drum.
3.. A type bar carrier for printing drums of multigraphs having a central supporting shaft and a pair of s acing bars, comprising a pair of plates having their opposing, bottom edges beveled, a third plate between said pair of plates and having its bottom located to form the bottom of an inverted channel with the beveled bottom edges of said pair of outer plates, the upper ends of said pair of outer plates projecting above the top of said center plate and forming a channel at the top of said supporting type bar carrier, a guide lug on one side of one of said plates, an angular groove formed in said guide lug adapted to receive one of said pair of spacing bars, a clamping bolt threaded into said guide lug and projecting into said angularv groove in front of said spacing bar located in said groove for locking said spacing bar in place in said groove, an adjustable bracing member projecting from one of said outer plates and adapted to enage the other of said spacing bars to hold said type bar carrier in a radial position in said type drum 4. A type bar carrier for printing drums of multigi'aphs having a central supporting shaft. and spacing bar spacing the ends of the drum near the periphery thereof, said carrier comprising a supporting member lot adapted to rest with its bottom edge on the periphery of the central supporting shaft, clamping means provided on the side of said supporting member and adapted to engage said spacing bar to hold said supporting member projecting radially from the periphery of'said supporting shaft.
5. A type bar carrier for printing drums of multigraphs having a central supporting shaft and spacing bar spacing the ends of the drum near the periphery thereof, said carrier comprising a supporting member adapted to rest with its bottom edge on the periphery of the central supporting shaft, clamping means provided on the side of said supporting member and adapted to engage said spacing bar to hold said supporting member projecting radially from the perlphery of said supporting shaft, an adjusting member on the side of said supporting member and adapted to engage another of said spacing bars to brace said supporting member from the spacing bar.
