LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.

Application filed January This inventionrelates to loose leaf binders and the object of the invention is to provide a loose leaf binder which will securely hold a quantity of leaves together but which may be readily opened to allow removal of the leaves.

Another object of the invention is to provide a cheap and efficient means for securing the leaves tightly in the binder.

A further object of the invention is to provide a binder comprising a pair ofstraps extending therethrough and through the leaves in the binder means being provided for tightening the straps to bind the leaves together and for loosening the straps to allow ready removal of the leaves.

A further object of the invention is to provide a binder which will fold flat for use in letter files and which may be made of heavier construction for other uses.

These objects and the several novel features of the invention are hereina' ter more fully described and claimed and the preferred form of construction by which these objects are attained is shown in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a loose leaf binder embodying my invention.

The binder comprises a pair of cover members l and 2 formed to provide a channel pocket l, the cover member 1 being hinged to the channel pocket at 3 and the cover member 2 being a continuation of the other side of the channel pocket. A pair of straps 5 and 6 are secured to the cover member 2 at 7 and extend through apertures provided therefor in the channel pocket 4 and through the notches provided therefor in the leaves 8 the straps extending through apertures 9 in the cover member 1 and the ends of the straps being secured to a member 10 which is folded and provided with an inturned flap 11 which is secured to the outer side of the cover member 1. The member 10 in this manner is hinged to the cover member 1 at Serial No. 1,832.

the point 12 and the cover member 1 is provided with apair of ears 13 behind which the member 10 is adapted to besecured as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. lVl1en the member therebetween, the leaves being provided with notches 14 provided with elongated port-ions 15 fitting over the straps 5 and 6.

By bending the ears 13 outwardly from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5 to that shown in dotted lines, the member 10 may be turned back on the hinge point 12 to the position shown in Fig. 4c and due to the straps 5 and 6 being secured to the member 10 at a distance from the hinge point 12 the straps 5 and 6 are loosened and allow the binder to be opened flat to allow removal or addition of leaves. WVhen the leaves have been removed or added the binder is closed and the member 10 is again turned to position against the cover which draws the straps 5 and 6 taut and bindingly holds the leaves together in the binder. the member 10 being positioned behind the cars 13 to prevent its removal. It will thus be seen that the leaves may be easily removed or added to the binder and the adjusting means for'the straps may be readily locked in the binding position.

From the foregoing description it becomes evident that the device is very simple and efficient in operation may be easily and cheaply made, will not easily get out of order and provides a device which accomplishes the objects described.

Having thus fully described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. In a loose leaf binder, a pair of cover members formedto provide a channel pocket,

there being pairs of apertures provided at the junction of each cover with the pocket, at least one of said cover members being hingedly connected wit-h its edge of the channel pocket, a pair of straps secured to the outer surface of one of the members and eX- tending through the said apertures to the outer side of the other. cover member, a lever member hinged to the outer side of the last named cover member near its free edge, the said straps being fastened to the said lever member at a point beyond thehinge point thereof whereby the lever member is adaptill) ed to loosen or tighten the straps, said last named outer cover member being notched at the edge adjacent each end of the said lever member into which the opposite outer cor ners of the lever member may be introduced to hold the member in its binding position substantially as described.

2. In a loose leaf binder, a pair of cover members formed to provide a channel pocket with which the cover members are connected,

one of said cover members only being hingedly connected to the channel pocket and both said cover members having a. pair of spaced apertures at about the point of connection with the pocket, a pair ot straps sethe other cover member, a lever member hinged to the said other cover near its free edge, the said straps being connected with the lever member at a point beyond its hinge point, means on said cover member for holding the lever member in its binding position, and a series of leaves in the channel pocket notched to engage over the straps.
