Description
Npv- 9, 1929. c. e. VAN BUREN 1,736,558
LOOSE LEAF BINDER Filed. Nov. 4, 1926 Patented Nov. 19, 1929 UNITED STATES CHESTER G. VAN BUREN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS LOOSE-LEAF BINDER Application filed November 4, 1926. Serial No. 146,110.
My invention relates to improvements in loose leaf binders and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character whereby loose leaves of paper or the like may be readily bound and held together or released for rearrangement, replacements or the like.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in 1 which,
1 is a perspective view of a loose leaf binder embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 a section of the same;
Fig. 3 a sectional view taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 a sectional view taken substantially on line H of Fig. 3.
The form of construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4c inclusive comprises two angle 2 irons 9 and 10 associated together as shown and pivotally connected at one end by means of the pivot 11 to provide between them a space for the reception of the edge of loose leaves of paper 12 or the like. The other ends of the angle irons 9 and 10 are detachably connected with each other by means of a lip 13 form d on the member 9 adapted and arranged to engage an opening 14 formed in the member 10 and whereby the corresponding ends of said members are detachably connected together. A curved leaf spring 15 is arranged in the space between the members 9 and 10, being secured to the member 9 at one end by means of the rivet 16, the other end of said spring sliding freely upon the other end of the member 9 and whereby a binding pressure will be exerted by said spring upon the edges of the loose leaves 12 inserted between the members 9 and 10. By this arrangement, it will be observed that any desired quantity or number of leaves 12 may be readily inserted between the members 9 and 10 and detachably bound therein. When it is desired to release said leaves, the corresponding ends of the members 9 and 10 are sprung to remove the lip 13 from the opening 14, whereupon the spring 15 will force said members to spring apart. When it is desired to rebind the loose leaves 12, all that is necessary is to place their edges in the space between the members 9 and 10 and force said members together until the lip 13 engages the opening 1 1 to lock said members in binding relation.
In order to protect the loose leaves thus bound, the binding elements 9 and 10 are preferably mounted in suitable covers. To facilitate such mounting, the horizontal leg 10 of the angle iron 9 is arranged within a channel-reenforcing member 17,. being then compressed upon the leg 10 to form the same into an enlarged base as shown. The enlarged base thus provided is then bound and secured in the binding of the cover members 18 as shown and whereby the said cover members will serve to protect the loose leaves 12 held between the binding members 9 and 10.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, donot wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz 1. A binder comprising two angle members pivotally connected together at one end and detachably connected at their other ends to provide a rectangular shaped space for the reception of detached leaves of paper or the like, said space formed on three sides by said angle members and open on the remaining side; a leaf spring secured to one of said members to bear upon and bind leaves or the like in said space; and cover members connected with said angle members to protect leaves bound thereby, substantially as described.
2. A binder comprising two angle irons pivotally connected together at one end, the other ends of said angle irons being detachably engaged with each other adapted to provide a rectangular shaped space for the reception of detached leaves of paper or the like, said space formed on three sides by said angle irons, and open on the remaining side; and a leaf spring secured at one end to one of said angle irons, the other end of said spring being free, said spring being arranged and adapted to bear upon and bind leaves of paper or the like between said angle irons, substantially as described.
3. A binder comprising two angle irons pivotally connected together at one end, the other ends of said angle irons being detachably engaged with each other adapted to provide a rectangular shaped space for the reception of detached leaves of paper or the like, said space formed on three sides by said angle irons, and open on the remaining side; a leaf spring secured at one end to one of said angle irons, the other end of said spring being free, said spring being arranged and adapted to bear upon and bind leaves of paper or the like between said angle irons; and a cover member permanently secured to one of said angle irons, substantially as described.
4. A device of the class described comprising cover members hingedly connected together; a metallic channel member secured within and between said cover members at the hinged connection thereof, and having an inturned longitudinal flange on each side thereof; and a detachable clamping member comprising two angle irons pivotally connected together at one end and deta-chably connected at the other ends to provide a lientangular shaped space for the reception of leaves or the like, said space formed on three sides by said angle irons and open on the re maining side, and a leaf spring secured to one of said members to bear upon and bind leaves or the like in said space, said clamping member being adapted for slidable connection with said channel member, and to be retained therein by said flanges substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
CHESTER G. VAN RUBEN.
